UNSOLVED - 655 Shareport Connection Issues
« on: December 13, 2008, 05:18:03 AM »

I upgraded to 1.21 right after it came out because I wanted to use the Shareport Network USB Utility. For the first month or so it worked great, and it still works but now about every 5 minutes I am getting a popup error message tittled: SharePort Network USB Utility saying, "Connection failed please try again".
Even though it says connection failed it will still print.

Can't keep this up because I am constantly having to click those boxes off. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rusty

I reinstalled the app and the windows went away.

Does not resolve it. Sorry for that. Seems to appear on laptops primarily.

Perhaps a notice for Dlink techies, I disabled Check for update and restarted the app (it was possible to reproduce the window by manually checking for updates). Let you know if it works.

EddieZ, thanks for the suggestion. Tried reinstalling. That didn't help. Totally uninstalled, shut down computer, reinstalled and still getting pop ups. Must be something with this computer, because it doesn't happen on the 2 other computers I have on my network. I really like this feature and would love to keep using it, but won't till I figure out what is happening. Would go with a print server, but haven't found many that a HP DESKJET 882C will work with.

Thanks again,

Rusty

Strange thing....you can reproduce the error by checking updates manually... but turning it off does not solve the issue. But it seems to have something to do with a connection (not with the router so it seems) that cannot be established.

@Lycan or D-Link tech:...what outside (WAN) communications or polling actions (check upgrade etc) does Shareport initiate (not counting the communication to the attached devices I assume) that might cause this error? The errors pop up every 30 or so seconds.

Next attempt: limiting Shareport in Windows firewall to local network only. Effect: no more errors for 5 min.
Let you know what happens with this setting in an hour or so.

Solution: I advise everybody experiencing this popup window error to limit both Shareport entries in Windows Firewall from the default access setting "every computer (also on the internet)" to "Only Local Network". I have not seen an error for 15 minutes after applying this.

It seems that Shareport is trying to connect to the WAN but does not always find the target. Maybe Dlink techies can elaborate on this?

Only drawback is that you won't be able to check for updates (uncheck just in case), but that feature was already pretty limited (once every 60 days).

@rsmin: if this also solves your issue you may want to change the topic title to "SOLVED: 655 Shareport Connection Issues"  ;D

Scratched my own back too with this brainwave ;)
I do would like to know though why Shareport is trying some communication outside the LAN with "check for updates" turned off.

I don't how about you, but the issue popped up again, regardless of the firewall setting.  >:(
Update: Did a complete reinstall again (not a repair) and the notice seems to disappear again.

Ran X-Netstat on the thing and saw SharePort closing an UDP port and opening a new one when giving the notice (Cannot create connection)...
To Dlink tech: Does having multiple instances on the LAN affect the port use on the router or something?
No log enties on the router.

Eddie,

Mine is back as well... Checked the ports and they are still set to "local"... Will try and reinstall again.

Thanks,

I did a total reïnstall (not a repair: removed all instances and .sys). It seemed to help.

Darn...I really would like to know from Dlink what's causing this: outside communications or internal port assignment error.

Eddy, I looked in windows firewall and found 2 entries
1) Shareport utility
2) Shareport utility (udp port)
I set both to only local and had no problems so far on both my desktop and laptops, running problem free for 24 hrs now.

Well, it must be something internal. I am running 3 computers. Only having this problem on my desktop. My 2 laptops aren't having this issue, and all are on my local network. They are all "hardwired" to router, don't run "wireless" unless I take one to another part of the house.

I am running XP PRO on both the laptops and XP Home on the desktop with the problem. Also, whats wierd is that this ran with no problems for about 2-3 weeks and just started the other day. (Seemingly after a Microsoft update, but can't be sure about that).

Right now I have uninstalled it on the desktop because of the popups are too aggravating.

Let's see if there comeback issue also occurs with you, Peter. It suddenly reoccured the next day, after about 1 day of absence. If it reoccurs, Dlink has something to look into IMHO.

@rsmin: I haven't got the issue on my desktop, but only on the wireless laptop. And since they have the same updates it should be a specific update, not a general one.
