Thanks for the tip here....it was making me crazy !!

Turning off the auto-update checker fixed it immediately !!

Still no reason why it ran fine for weeks then suddenly started happening....

Still no problem here.
But, crazy as I am'I tried to manually look for updates, expecting to get a message from widows firewaal or a failure notice from the shareport utility.
But it simply came back with the message: This version is the latest version.

It might be checking through the update feature of the router. That one is not blocked by the firewall (utility calls update feature on allowed IP/range in firewall -> router dials in -> utility reports the answer)
Which gives me another brainwave: turn off the update feature on the router, perhaps that will clear the issue completely.

I suspect the update server is offline sometimes and the error occurs accordingly.

Good thinking, but if so, it's a pretty serious security breach, that would mean that all installations with an DIR655 are equipped with kind of a backdoor.
(EDIT) Have to add whilst running shareport utility or a tool with similar capabilities.

Ok, now I had to remove it from one of my laptops which has been working great for a couple of weeks since first installing it.

When I turn the printer on (which is in the shareport) It keeps popping up saying it has found a new USB item... You know the small screen that comes up from the bottom... That keeps popping up showing it is there and then keeps "beeping".. Not getting the same window I am on the Desktop. This is amazing after both of them running great for several weeks now can't use it on either computer...

Do you know a way to verify if there's is actually a connection from shareport utility to the outside world,
even if we try to block using windows firewall?
If this does happen I'll stop using this tool untill things get cleared up.
By the way: I can't find any update feature that runs automatically in the DIR655 settings.

Try This:

Right click on the shareport taskbar icon -> Click on Advanced options -> Uncheck "run shareport network USB utility when windows starts"

Keep me posted!

rest assured, we're looking in to it. But, I'll need more information. What USB device are you connecting to the USB port on your router? (brand/model)

I'm running some lab tests right now, I'm seeing a trend towards external hard drives.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks!

* Connected via powered usb hub:
Freecom USB HDD (nothing fancy, just a HDD in a USB 2.0 case)
Samsung laserprinter CLP315

* Observation in Xnetstat:
Shareport UDP port closing and a new one already started (other port number).

* Issue occurs only on wireless laptop, never on wired desktop
* Issue occurs randomly/suddenly, without having either of the devices connected through Shareport on any machine. Perhaps if I connect to the HDD on desktop the issue will pop up on the laptop, I'll have a look.
* disconnecting/disabling shareport (red icon) did not make a difference.
* Pop up interval 30 sec.
* Error reproducible by clicking on Look for updates (same pop up)
* Turning off automatic updates did not make a difference (because it is set do that after 60 days  :) )

* Once I did the Windows firewall trick it issue abruptly ceased. And come back the next day late in the afternoon. Did a complete de-install and re-install (manually deleting the driver files) and it has not occurred since (two days).

* not letting it autostart: if exiting and restarting does not work, why should no running it on startup do work? Perhaps driver conflict or something?
Need more environment data?
