White Video and FTP failing
« on: June 19, 2015, 09:09:37 AM »

I have been having two serious problems with my DSC-935L.

First problem: The video, and snapshots at least once a day turn white and stay white (with the exception of the black header top left hand corner) until I power cycle the camera.  A simple reboot will not fix the white video problem.

I have seen the white video problem 4 different ways.
1.   Going through the mydink website.  (Windows 7, and IE 11).
2.   Using the mydink Lite and mydink Home apps on my android phone and android tablet
3.   Bypassing the mydink website and when connected on same network as the camera, logging directly into the camera web interface. (Windows 7, and IE 11).
4.   The ftp uploaded snapshot.

The second problem is after a few hours the periodic ftp upload fails and then stops working and often requires a reset to factory defaults and a reconfig to work again.  Exact failure time is unpredictable. It always fails within a couple of hours, sometimes only  a half-hour, last failure was after 45 minutes.  I have  rock solid FTP uploads working right now on 3 other D-Link cameras: two 2132LB1, and a 2332L.  In all cases the cameras are going to the same FTP space using the same login credentials.

I had the EXACT same problem with a previous 935L and after working with technical support they sent me the camera I am using now.

Firmware rev is 1.05.  hardware level: A1

I have contacted D-Link on these issues and they are not being very responsive.

Waht region are you located?

Can you do a factory reset and test the camera again after setting up from scratch?
Is the camera indoor or out doors?
Whats the camera pointing at?

What Mfr and Model host router do you have?

Thank you for your response FurryNutz.

I am located in the United State (CA).
I have repeatedly reset the unit to factory defaults and reconfigured the camera. Same results.
The router is an AT&T u-verse modem/router/wifi box.  WRT the FTP problem, I suppose there could be some interaction with the camera and the router, but the FTP periodic upload works for a while then stops.  Lastly I have two other cameras (2132LB1, and a 2332L) working flawlessly with a periodic FTP snapshot upload.

Regarding the camera location.  It is inside but pointed outside. The white video issue usually happens in the afternoon (camera is pointed west), and I suspect the camera sensor "locks up" under certain conditions if it gets some direct sun or a reflection off a car windshield.

Seems like if the other two cameras are running fine, that the 935L could be the problem.

Yes that is my conclusion also, but this is the second 935L that has exhibited the same symptoms.  I think it is a firmware problem on the 935L and FTP is busted.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Has this been resolved?  I wonder if it's a firmware or actual hardware lighting sensor issue.

I'm experiencing this exact same problem with my DSC-935L.  I have it located inside a window pointing to the outside.  It seems to happen when the sun gets too bright.. about 9am or so.. then stays white ALL day... I left it on to see if it would ever recover... it did at about dusk.. .7pm or so.

I just bought this thing and may just return it for something else.  I'm running firmware 1.06.02 hardware version A agent version 2.0.19-b50.

Was a factory reset performed after the FW was updated then setup from scratch?

Hello:

I am having the exact same problem: my DCS-935L goes from a normal video stream to “all white” when the scene becomes bright (mid-morning). Then goes back to normal operation when the scene becomes darker (as dusk approaches). It is very strange since I have two brand new 935L cameras side-by-side. One works perfectly, the other seems to crash when the scene brightens. Here are a few more bits of info:

1 ...   Both cameras are on an inside window sill, pointing outside, toward the north. They are pointing to virtually the same outside area. I have arranged them in a “cross-fire” arrangement with a small overlapped area in the middle.
2 ... The only change I made from default settings was within “Day/Night Mode” – I changed the mode to “Always Day Mode.” This eliminated the reflection problem with the LED/IR at night.
3 ... Other than that change, both cameras are set up identically with default settings for “image setup” and all other settings.
4 ... Firmware version is 1.06.02 for both 935L cameras.
5 ... Hardware version “A” for both.
6 ... Agent Version 2.0.19-b50 for both.
7 ... Video compression format is H.264 for both cameras.
8 ... Both cameras feed a new DNR-202L.

Being a new user (I purchased the cameras and the DNR-202L a couple of weeks ago), I was totally confused and thought I had done something wrong. I have done a factory reset on the camera and ran the wizard multiple times. Then I saw this thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for that info.  So this leads me to believe that it's a failure rate on the hardware with the light sensor..  I'm now debating if I should return/exchange for another unit.  I may do that, however, if the 2nd one has the same issue, I will stop there.. no point in doing so many multiple exchanges until you find a "good" one.  Perhaps Dlink needs to review their quality process for the light sensors in these units.

FurryNutz (and others):

Thanks for your help but I am giving up and getting a full refund from Amazon while I still can. I have wasted many hours on this project and am disgusted. About noon today both cameras started showing all white pictures. It is a bright sunny day (but again, the cameras are both pointing north, away from direct sunlight).

I have many other priorities that don't allow me to constantly troubleshoot this product including (unfortunately) being a caregiver for my wife. Seeing that others are having the same problem (and have for quite some time) is further evidence that this product is not ready for a dependable, problem-free, day-in day-out application.

Thanks again very much for trying to help me.

Sorry it they didn't work out for you. I'll pass this one to D-Link for review.

Good luck in your endeavours.

I also purchased 2 of the DCS-935L from Amazon and I'm experiencing the same issue (white screen intermittently during the day) with both units when they are facing outside, behind a window, facing a street. Both were replacing DCS-932L that have never had an issue in the same location (external window facing).  I thought they were freezing up until I noticed I could access the Admin GUI, still hear audio, and if I leave them they will come back into focus during the night (which confirmed they were switching to Night mode)

I tried the following over the last 2 weeks:
-Resetting to Defaults, Changing Wireless 5.2 to 2.4 and channels, B/W mode, Firmware updates (1.07 with factory reset afterwards), and etc.
-Auto, Manual, and Day Mode Schedule will reproduce the white screen multiple times during the day.  Mid morning, example 8-9AM, it occurs more frequently.  When it was recently overcast, on a Sunny Day, it occurred about every hour during the day.
-Following up with Customer Support (to inform me they were defective).

Work Arounds
-Changing to Day Mode is the only way to prevent it from switching to Night Mode.  Although this defeats the purpose as I need to switch it back manually if I want to record night footage with my DNR-202L.
-Moving the same cameras to an indoor facing location, not window facing, will switch between Day/Night correctly.
-Power cycling will return functionality.
-Only other method to restore is switch to Day Mode only before resetting within the ADMIN Page.  If you don't, example leaving it in auto, a reset through the gui will not correct it.

I also agree this appears to be a bug with the sensor with sunlight or car reflections, but it's odd is the Day Mode Schedule will not prevent it (which would be a decent work around until it was corrected hopefully in firmware). In my experience the sensor will override this option.

I'm nearing the return window as well and will issue the return request today through Amazon.  It's unfortunate as I'm a big fan of Dlink Cameras.  I have probably purchased over 40 cameras in the last few years for myself or family (DCS-930, 932, 5010, 5009, 5029) but there is an issue with this model if you attempt to leverage it for outside purposes (example through a window).
