The thunder sounded like a bomb blew up right outside our home today and even though we didn't lose power, the strike must have affected the cable line because my Ooma Telo VoIP modem and my less than a year old SB6141 Surfboard modem both are "kaput".

Luckily, I still have my SB6120 but now my Link indicator light on it is blinking amber (meaning 10-100 MBPS, right?) on the WAN instead of it's normal blue (indicating Gigabit).

Everything else seems normal but I wonder what's been affected on my 857.

Wow, sorry to hear that bud.

One thing you might try is factory reset everything.
Check the WAN port speed on the 857, you can set it for 1000Mb.
What are the indicated status lights on the modem after everything is running? List them out for us.

You might check the power supplies on the 6141 and the other devices, could have blown out the power supply. I think you can use the same PS from the 6120.

What power strip do you have?
Harry recommended a TRIPPLITE Brand, I'll have to find out which one he mentioned.

Oh, man, it was a catastrophe of electronic failures yesterday.

I did run to WalMart and get a cable surge suppressor but when I read the fine print it said "not for lightning strikes which may impact cable and phone lines" or something like that.    >:(

For the 6141, I did switch out power supplies and it wasn't that.  The 6141 worked fine on the 6120.  I do have pretty beefy backup power supply and surge suppressor but it looks like it got me through the cable line and the phone/DSL line (we have DSL for UVerse TV).

The lights on the 6120 are:

power-green
receive-blue
send-green
online-green
link-amber (flashing)

I'll check out that Tripplite!

Swap cables between the 857 and Modem and see and try that WAN port Speed setting.
If you connect a wired PC that has Gb Network card directly to the 6120, what light do you get there? Should be blue however if not, could be 6120. Might need help there as well.

I would also call Motorola and see if they can help as well. I called them last year to get a new power supply and got one free of charge. Seem like good support.

Did a cable swap between the 857 and 6120 and no-go.

Called Moto last night and they said "sorry" act of God.  I kinda figured that.  So, I'm back to the 6120 which is fine, I don't notice any difference in speed.

With the 857 I just changed the WAN setting from Auto to 1000MBPS and rebooted both the 857 and the 6120.  The LINK light on the 6120 does not light up at all and the Globe on the 857 doesn't either.

I switched the setting to 100MBPS on the 857 and the LINK light on the 6120 flashes amber and the Globe light on the 857 comes up blue.  I tested that e4200 (gigabit ports) I have with the 6120 and the LINK light flashes blue, indicating it's maximizing it's potential.

So, yes, I think my 857 was damaged.  It looks like the surge came through the cable line, hosed my modem and then entered the 857 through the WAN port and hosed the gigabit part of it and possibly the wifi.  I'm also getting spotty wifi connects/disconnects which didn't happen before the storm.   :'(

Damn, well sounds like you got it narrowed down then. Lossed the 6141 and the 857 isn't working well. I would call DLink and ask for level 2 support. Even though is an act of god, might see if they can RMA it for a repair or a new one. Ask and see how much a fee is for a repair.

Lightning happen there a lot? If so, need to look into some lightning suppression on the cable line.

ROFL!!!

The 857 is working, I'm on it now but it's definitely damaged.  I switched wifi settings from 20/40MHz auto to just 20MHz on the 2.4 band and it seems to have stabilized but it might be too early to tell!

I think I'll do what you suggested and call DLink support about RMA'ing this one.

First person.  Didn't have to do any troubleshooting because I told her I knew you.   ::)

No but seriously, I told her some things that you, Java and Harry know and I think that helped speed things along.   ;D

Awesome. Good to hear. Well get that sent off.

Motorola wont do any repairs at all? Thats a shame. Figured they might have something for repairs, even if it cost something. However probably not worth it as the fee would be about the same as getting a new one at the store. I'd go get another and keep the 6120 on back up. Glad you had one huh?

I know, Moto is getting cheap.  I haven't had it but for about 8 months maybe.  That's what I get for being honest, I guess!  No biggie.  I did find a place online that fixes modems and I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they think it's worth it.
