I know that Dlink recommends certain antenna orientations but I've also read several posts where people are saying you need to 'play around with the antennas' to get optimal performance in your home.  How do you determine a good connection?  Is it just windows network connections details where the link speed and strength is listed?

Yep. Connection strength % and ofcourse real life performance.

your pc and router will never agree in the numbers.  so try to get both as high as possible for whatever they report.

Didn't even realize that the router presented its view of the signal strength... I'll check it too.

are the antennae directional?

It might help you see what is causing the bad signal or if you can adjust your antennas to make the signal stronger.

Neat tool... The RSSI measurement seems to be close to the signal strength readings shown by the router and my laptop's network status tools.  The speed isn't even close to either??

I might sound like I'm being picky but it's omni directional not onmni directional, and not all antennas are omni directional. The factory supplied antenna's that come with the DIR-655 are omni directional.

An omni directional antenna is an antenna system which radiates power uniformly in one plane with a directive pattern shape in a perpendicular plane. This pattern is often described as "donut shaped".

Yes, you're being very picky for thisc typo and the fact that my answer is direct response to a question (are the antennae directional?) and not a general statement. Are you gonna rephrase all forum style replies to a well balanced piece of literature? Or is it just the fact that we've had our differences in the past and you tend to get very emotional when people disagree with you? (any spelling errors there?)

I'm sorry if my post came off as a personal attack against you. It wasn't meant to be. I guess I should have put a smiley in there some where. If you had said "The" antennas are omni directional, I wouldn't have said anything at all. Still it wasn't meant to be nasty or anything like that, seems you are the one getting emotional this time around. I'm an electronic technician with a background in radio communications so stuff like this interests me, thats all. Again, I'm sorry if I offended you and I don't have any kind of grudge against you.
