First of all, I tried to reply to a similar thread but there was no reply button on chrome or Firefox.

I purchased a DCS 963l. I'ts under an eave right over the garage door. pointing at the driveway and front door. Temps are in the 60's right now.

I've been playing with this thing for a while and have a couple of issues.

1. When I tried to run the firmware update, it ran forever without finishing..

2. The plugin for the web based setting of the motion detection area doesn't work in either chrome or FF. The plugin downloaded but I don't see the image area tool.

3. I used my android phone to set the image area. I'm ASSUMING that the colored areas are the areas that will be monitored for motion. (you might want to make that clear in the manual. )

4. I've tried settings for sensitivity from 10 through 70 with the same reaults.

  • Constant false alerts all day long mostly caused by changes in the sun (the same thing happens with my 933 inside when sunlight coming in changes. I COULD live with that.
  • HOWEVER, even at 70 percent sensitivity, it is only detecting motion less than 20 percent of the time.. eg. When one of our cars pulls into the driveway it DOESN"T TRIGGER.. WTH??   it triggers randomly all day but misses an SUV???   If I walk across the field.. ie. constant distance, it only detects me 20 percent of the time.. It missed the mailman and UPS driver today.  It seems to have the same issues in daylight and at night. To get to the front door, you pass within 10 feet of the camera.

I have the web based setting to

- 30 seconds between videos and pics
- Didn't change the image contrast etc.
- Trigger by motion (Pics/vids)
-Vide-  Pre event 3 seconds  - 10 sec max

I am going to try to manually load the firmware from the web interface and also try a reboot from the interface.

I realize that this camera is not designed for outdoor use but I believe I would have the same issues with it inside.

One possible issue is that if there is a false alarm then there is a 30 second period before it starts checking again.. But that doesn't explain missing vehicles let alone people.

OVerall, I'm pretty disappointed with this unit.

I figured out the motion tool on the web based page. I missed the notice at the top of the browser to allow the plugin.

I also was able to manually run the firmware update. I reset the motion area and sensitivity to 50 percent. I'll update you tomorrow with the results.

I'll get back to you on the firmware. I manually updated it last night.   Today I got no less than 25 false alarms, but this illustrious piece of 'technoloty' missed

1. My son getting into his car and pulling out of the driveway (within 10' of the camera)
2. The mailman who also passes within 10'
3. Me coming home in my Ford Explorer.
4. the 6' tall UPS delivery guy
5. All 240 pounds of me right in front of it.

It did trigger when I put my phone RIGHT in front of the lens to  measure the wifi signal.  It also triggered this morning when I pulled out of the garage (Still dark) and 2 or 3 times when headlights went by on the street.

So, it gives me false alerts all day long for slight shadow changes but it missed a 4000 pound truck and 3000 pound car.. That certainly doesn't inspire confidence. I believe you forward things to Dlink so I'm hoping you can forward my frustration to them.

I am in Pennsylvania, USA

The main router is an actiontec from verizon. My son and I have a number of devices that function with no problems. I am attaching through a belkin router that is in my breezeway and set as a WAP.  Devices working include - 2 android phones, 2 wireless printers, a wireless thermostat, a laptop, an ipad,

using wpa/wpa2 personal AES encryption

    More Info
    Protected Mode >   off

    802.11e/WMM QoS >    on

The signal strength should be good. The belkin is up high and there is a cinder block wall and the wooden beam over the garage door.

Today when I came home, the unit had lost the wifi. I rebooted it (pulled the plug) and it reconnected after about 10 min

Camera NameDCS-936L
Time & Date2017/3/1 17:03:40
Firmware Version1.02.01
Hardware VersionA
Agent Version2.1.0-b11

A couple of points

1 The 933l I have inside on wifi has been working good for about a year and a half. No issues.
2. YEs, I could set up the camera using the app.
3. I checked where the camera is with wifi analyzer on my phone and the signal strength is -70 bd. That could be a problem. I can run ethernet to the garage or under the eve and put a wifi repeater or access point out there.
4. I am set up with 2 wifi points. One in the basement at the far end of the cape cod house and one in my breezeway. All of our other devices work ok with this. They both use the same SSID. I don't see any signal from the basement wap at the camera.
5. I am using gmail for sending the emails. I am probably going to use a different email account. I don't see anything ending up in junk mail.

I see it on my actiontec

---------------------------------

Questions

1. Is there anything I can do about the sensitivity. I have the setting at 20 percent and most of the screen except where it sees the street is marked with opaque reddish tiles
2. Does anything happen if my 933l is sending an email that would block the 936? IOW, can my dlink account handle 2 emails at once? I would think it could.
3. Am I correct in assuming that the reddish tiles are ACTIVE spots for motion detectors?

One thing I'm probably going to do is put an SD card in and also set it up for FTP. I'm a bit under the weather so it will take a day or so to get that done.  I'll try a setting of 30 percent tomorrow and see if that actually sees large vehicles movint.

Sorry about the rambling.

thanks
chris

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email. I passed this on to D-Link for review as well.
Let us know how it goes please.

Any news on these false positives on motion detection? I am still getting up to 50 a day at 20% sensitivity. It simply seems to be a readjustment of the camera that sets it off. There is no motion in the video clip, just a refocus of the camera.  So frustrating. Hoping a firmware fix will help this issue. It is the same on all three of my DCS 936L cameras. I was reading reviews of this device on Amazon and it seems this issue is a major problem with this camera.

D-Link is aware of the issue. Not sure what else has been done as of yet. I'm waiting on an RMA to arrive as the one I initially got was defective. Hoping I can get the new one set up and test this out. Been told the MD is different on this camera.  :-\

Can you post your settings for motion detect and I'll apply those to mine and test...

I got my camera in and installed yesterday.
Post your configuration details and i'll apply them to my camera and see how it goes.

I just set up MD on my camera using the MDL Lite app and set 3 blocks on where the camera should see motion. It's looking out my back window at a road that's about 80-100 feet from the house. Cars travel this road here and there so will see if it picks up any thing. Sensitivity set to default 30%.

I have the sensitivity set at 25% and the 9 boxes square in the bottom right selected.

The following links show the video of what my camera does during refocus. It is at the 5 second mark on both videos. I have two others 936L cameras in addition to this one and they have the same issue. If the sensitivity is set any less, it will not pick up movement of a person when they walk to the front door.

I think I'm seen the same thing. I should be getting a bit more actual movement notifications on cars that pass by on that road my camera is looking at. I presume if I can actually pick that up. Movement should be good enough. I have been getting notifications however I believe mostly cloud shadows as it has been cloudy and rainy and mixed over cast since getting this set up. I had watched the camera from my phone and noticed cars going by here and there and didn't get any notifications.  :-\

I agree with you cgmendla, I have been using three other Dlink cameras with great success. Each camera does exactly what I want. Then I purchased this 936. I have tried every trick I know to get it to detect motion without success. My 936 is acting just like yours. I have been experiencing exactly the same problems you described.  I am on a crusade to write as many consumer warnings as possible. Don't buy this camera-it will drive you crazy! P.S. I am successfully running a DCS-5010, a DCS-930, and my old original DCS-932 which is still running perfectly after several years. I have never had a problem with these cameras. The DCS-936 is a dud. Save your sanity and get a refund if you can. Just my opinion. Oh, by the way it does have nice high definition.

Thank you for the feed back. This issue is under review by D-Link. I hope that next FW update may addresses these issue.
For those who can't wait for the next update, please make contact with D-Link support on the phone and talk to them about your concerns and or return the camera to place of purchase.

Thank you.
