DNS-343

Hello!
- HDD configuration is standard (individual disk) of 4 HDDs
- I turned off the DNS-343 and took out one disk
- Put back, DNS-343 does not see the disk and offered to create a raid
Why?

Nothing. Just pulled out, I reload the DNS-343 and inserted back.

When you say you 'reload the DNS-343' what do you mean?

I am sorry but I do not understand why you would take a disk out of a working unit for no reason - it just does not make sense.  As for the unit asking to create a RAID disk, it means that the unit no longer considers the disk as formatted and wants to format it as as Standard disk.

I am sorry for the delay.  I've been pretty busy with work lately, but I promise I will post what I think is going on and what I think the solution is as soon as I can.  I dealt with a similar issue and, with some assistance from a Linux guru that is a friend of mine, I was able to fix it.  I think you will be surprised how easy the solution is.  Since it has been a while, I need to take a minute to make sure that I fully understand it again in order to explain.

Okay.  I am still trying to reach my Linux guru friend, but here is what I have so far.  I will supplement this thread with any additional information that I learn after speaking with him.

Basically, the solution is fairly simple if you have a Linux machine.  If you do not, then you still may be able to do it, but I do not know how.  When you add or change a drive within the DNS-343 (and presumably the DNS-323) the web GUI interface will always want to format the drives (all of them I think).  This can be circumvented by doing the following:

1)  Mount the drives on a Linux box (either simultaneously or individually it doesn't matter).
When you do you will be presented with two windows (one will be the mounted partition and the contents of the drive and the other will be the system files of the drive (we are interested in working with the latter.  If you are moving an existing drive the files discussed below should already be present, but if you are adding a new drive then you will likely have to add the files.

2)  There are four (4) files of interest: ChkSCSI, dsk_mapping, raidtab, and raidtab2web

3)  I cannot remember which is the one that is critical for modifying to address the issue (when I reach my friend I should find out and will update this thread).  I am going to attach screenshots of how they should all look.

4)  Modifications should be made under terminal using sudo nano [file name], then control-O to write changes, then control-X to exit

5)  You will still be prompted to format the drives by the browser interface for the DNX-343, but if you simply skip passed that your drives should be recognized.

I added a step 5 which is critical, but one of my screenshot settings is off which causes the web interface to continuously present the prompt screen identifying a hard drive change and wanting to format.  I think I can fix this with a settings tweak, but I'm not positive.  Let me post back soon.  I wish the subject of this thread could be changed to reflect the problem it addresses for future reference.  Keep in mind that simply skipping past the web interface formatting prompt is all that is required; however, I have addressed this issue and fixed it before.  I just need to remember how.  More to come soon.

OK. I found this thread which is the thread that originally started me down this path:

I think the only way to get the DNS-343 to stop complaining about the drives being changed is to have the fun plug installed so that you can ssh or telnet into the DNS-343 and initiate the command "hd_verify -w".

Thank you dallen for the information (we have it stored for possible future use).

I often wonder what people are thinking when they 'just take a disk out' of a working NAS, after all they don't do that with their computers (at least I hope not).  Many of the problems we see on these forums stem from people doing things with their NAS boxes that they wouldn't dream of doing with their computers - strange.
