DIR-825 Ver C1 has no USB menu
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:04:43 AM »

Hi,

I'm trying to share my printer via my DIR-825's USB port.

This video mentions going to the USB settings button on the left under the Setup tab and choosing Network USB.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZZB1Qxgjyw

However, my router does not have that USB settings button. I only have Wireless Settings, Network Settings, Media Server, Storage, and IPV6.

I'm on firmware 3.04. Hardware version C1.

I've tried SharePortPlusUtility_forRevC_421_win_multi_20130701.zip from ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-825/driver_software/ and it does not find any devices.

ShareportUtility_120_win_multi_20120924.zip says the installation is incomplete after I install it and try to run it.

The USB port LED on the front of the router does not light up.

Plugging in a USB thumb drive doesn't do anything either - no light, and nothing is found in SharePort.

How do I get to that missing menu?

Thanks!

I believe the USB menu was removed from Rev C models. I presume that the video may have been referencing rev A or B models.

What region are you located?

Have you tried the latest SP version here?
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50707.msg226737#msg226737

What modem printer do you have?
If the above newer version fails to work for you, I suggest looking into a Printer Server device:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/print-servers/dpr-1020-usb-multifunction-print-server

Or a USB to LAN adapter

Ugh, why would they remove it? That makes it so confusing.

Australia. The rather outdated dlink.com.au only has firmware 3.00 from January 2012. That version doesn't have the menu.

dlink.com has 3.01 from June 2012. That doesn't have the menu either.
dlink.de has 3.04 from June 2013. That also doesn't have the menu.

Seems a bit messy!

Yup that was actually the first one I tried, as dlink.com.au does not have any Shareport software available.

It's a disappointing mess - the DIR-825 product page on dlink.com.au clearly states "Includes SharePort™ technology* for Sharing USB Devices like Printers and Storage over Your Network".

When I click on the SharePort hyperlink in the line above, I'm sent to a dead 404 page.

The downloads page doesn't list any SharePort software.

Thanks, but this experience with DLink doesn't give me any confidence in the company. If they remove an advertised feature, they shouldn't still advertise that feature - that's false advertising. They also shouldn't keep the same model number as it is confusing. To add to that, my DIR-825 failed a month after I first bought it. I will most definitely get a different brand now.

A possible reason that it was removed was maybe that the FW and HW interactions is now automatic thus there is not need for a menu to enable it. Before there were 2 options, Shareport and USB ISP Dongle or WDS feature. I believe that the USB ISP Dongle option was removed first, thus eliminating the need for the Sharport USB option. So I presume that they just make the USB connection automatic and if Shareport was used it would detect the printer with out having a menu option. The menu option would have only been to select either the Shareport or USB ISP Dongle and thats is. There is no  other options to configure.

So this wouldn't be messy rather it would clean this menu up by eliminating this menu.

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process

We only recommend using FW from regional areas so if your in the AU region, it's recommended to only use that regional FW in the AU region. Each region has different features and rules on how D-Link develops FW for each region. You should be contacting your regional D-Link office to inquire if there is more recent versions available and to check to see if there is any troubleshooting help from D-Link support them selves. They will have help and information that you need regarding this issue.
http://support.dlink.com.au/

I don't have the Rev C 825 however I do have the DIR-655 Rev C which I believe maybe the same HW and platform, just with out the 5Ghz radio. I can check to see if my 655 connects using SP with my printer.

What model is this printer? Mines and HP LaserJet P2014n

I don't think this experience should effect your thoughts about D-Link. I believe you have expectations of features that are not supported on this Rev model router, or information that does not apply to a Rev C model, with out fully understanding reasons why they may not be there and not understanding the whole picture. This also maybe a printer issue as well as you have not established that your connection between the printer and router is good nor have you established that the Mfr printer drivers you are using for the printer are up to date nor have you established that this printer works with other devices. We can only presume that this is a user configuration issue at this point.

I sure hope so!

Not before updating, as the official instructions both on the dlink youtube video and the Shareport link (dlink.com.au/shareport) don't mention factory resets, they only mention upgrading the firmware.

I did do a factory reset just before my original post though. It didn't help.

The support link on the AU page does not list any SharePort software. Does that mean the firmware listed does not have SharePort support?

I only started looking at the US and DE firmware when the AU firmware didn't work.

I've tried two printers - a Samsung ML-1660 and a HP PhotoSmart C6280.

The HP has Ethernet built-in but I only use it for scanning. It's the Samsung which I want to hook up to the network.

Well ... the DLink website says the DIR-825 can share a USB printer. If this rev model does not support it, then the website should not state it.

OK I finally had some time to do more testing today.

I'm now suspecting the USB port on the router is dead.

I did the following:

- Factory reset, flashed the AU v3.00 firmware, factory reset again
- Did not reload any old config file as always.
- Did not configure any settings whatsoever.
- Plugged in a 4GB FAT32 USB flash drive which I have confirmed to be working on a PC
- USB LED on the front of the router does not light up
- Logged in to router, went straight to Setup, Storage. Ensured that Enable Web File Access is ticked.
- No devices appear under "Number Of Devices".
- Power-cycled the router with the USB device plugged in.
- Still the same - nothing appears under Number of Devices, and the USB light does not come on.
- Inserted an 8GB flash drive. Same thing happens, i.e. nothing.

Does that sound like a faulty USB port?
If so, I would have to get yet another replacement.

Just be cause it's not listed, may not mean it's not supported. You'd have to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask them about that. You can use other regional SP software located on other sites.

To test the USB port with a USB drive, the drive needs to be formatted NTFS and the size should be 500Gb - 1Tb. D-Link doesn't officially support larger drives. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58799.0

Let us know if you can test the port with a smaller size drive using NTFS. This will let you know if the port is working or not. I'll test my Rev C DIR-655 with my printer.

I was able to see and connect to my LaserJet using SP v4.30 Windows 7x64 and SP v4.40 Mac OSX 10.9.2 on my DIR-655 Rev C today.

Is capture is from OSX.

I plugged in an external 1TB NTFS USB2 2.5" drive. The drive did not spin up and there were no lights. The drive works on my laptop.

Faulty USB port?

Does this drive have external Power? I'm not sure if the router can power up that size of drive alone with out additional power. If so then I presume the port could be bad.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
