How to setup DIR-868l with AVM FRITZBOX 7390
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:42:43 AM »

Hello,

I am considering to purchase DIR 868l for my WLAN, but need to be sure that it works in my existing environment before
Therefore I am interested if anybody can help me

Currently I have a FRITZBOX connected to a VDSL connection (downlink 50 Mbit/s, uplink 10 Mbit/s will become at the end of year 100 Mbit downlink)

AVM is supporting the VDSL connection very well. It is also my IP phone infrastructure

Only point where I am not happy is the WLAN performance and I am considering to connect DIR-868l to it
I want to keep the AVM 7390 for phone and as vdsl modem (since DIR-868l does not support both)

So I am wondering if there are descriptions how to set up the DIR-868l. Anything to be changed on AVM as well beside switching of the WLAN?

Thanks
Ulrich

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

I see that this 7390 has it's own router built in. It's not recommended to connect another router in line with a primary router:
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

It would be recommended to use the 868L as a wired AP if the ISP modem will be the primary router:
Turning a router into an AP.

Or get into a dedicated DAP model AP:
