iPhone 5S slow wifi speeds
« on: April 06, 2014, 11:35:33 AM »

On the iPhone 5S, I get extremely slow wifi speeds, about 1-2mbps according to speedtest. meanwhile all laptops sustain about 25mbps (which is my rated ISP speeds) and my desktop via ethernet sustains the correct speeds as well.

The iphone struggles to get 1-2mbps and lots of times it drops as the speedtest is running.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF  Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

It's not recommended to wireless speed test as there ar many variables to wireless that can cause false negatives and impact wireless performances. Some devices may not have higher thru put abilities like phones for accurately testing wireless speeds. If your other devices are getting at speeds results and wired PCs are testing speeds accurately, then I would presume there could be an issue at the phone level.

Hardware version: A1
Firmware version: 1.04b10
Region: USA

default SSID is changed.
wireless mode: N & G only mixed
channel width set to 20mhz on ly
Channel: 11
Security: WPA2-Personal/AES
no cordless phones or other routers
Didn't find Short GI option, WLAN partition is off by default, did not find Extra Wireless Protection, HT 20/40 Co-existence is grayed out (i'm assuming because i have it set to 20mhz only)

Before I used the DIR-645 i had a netgear wndr3400 v1 and my iPhone 5S wifi speeds were consistently around 11-12mbps without hiccups.

On the DIR-645 the speedtest shows it stuttering up and pausing and dropping. overall not smooth. And I dont have this issue with other routers that I access either.

Try setting single mode N, WPA2/AES only, Auto 20/40Mhz and disable 20/40Mhz Co-existence.

Most Apple products support N mode and 40Mhz band width now days.

Are u still using G mode devcies?

yes i'm using G mode for compatibility with my older devices (housemates older laptops). I originally had it defaulted at auto 20/40mhz but changed it after searching around on the forums and noticed improvements for an hour or so but now it's back to being slow. Also I read on Apple's support website that they recommended 20mhz for the iphone (but this was after I had already set it to try it out)

Ya 20Mhz will so things down for devices that don't support the 40Mhz band.

Just give a test to see if my suggestion works, then go back to mixed G and N mode with 20/40Mhz existence enabled after the test....The iPhones should pick up 40Mhz when thats set to Auto. However they could be dropping to the 20Mhz band due to your other devices and interferences...

alright I just tried your suggestion and i'm still experiencing inconsisten speeds. perhaps it is due to interference as you said and its causing the iphone to drop to the lower band. My latest speed test shows a 0.47 Mbps download.

I'm thinking about returning the router at this point. It's a great router for my desktop (only issue i've noticed is that I get a 5-10 second connection drops every now and then during gaming sessions) but I think these two issues are enough to sway me away. Thank you for your help though FurryNutz

just following up, haven't returned the router just yet but i went to best buy and bought an Asus RT-N66 and set it up. i'm getting the proper speeds now on my iphone so I definitely believe something was wrong with the DIR-645, either some setting or maybe a hardware fault. not sure.

Possible issue between the 645 and the iPhone 5s. I recommend returning the 645. Unfortunately I presume that the problem will be the 645 and the iPhone 5s. The 645 I believe has entered in to EOL mode ore headed that way and I presume that there wouldn't be any more fixes in FW for it. Any chance they might have a different DIR series router there to test?

Incompatibility is a quite likely possibility. The store I went to did not carry any D-Link routers. Only Asus and Netgear so I could only test the Asus. I'll probably just go with the Asus since its working fine for my needs. Once again, thank you for helping me to try and troubleshoot the DIR-645. I wanted it to work since I got it on sale for so cheap but as it turns out, it won't  :(
