Extender becomes inaccessible after hours of inactivity?
« on: January 03, 2014, 10:07:52 AM »

I've been running a DAP-1320 in wireless extender mode with the newest firmware for the past couple of months, and it works great whenever it's running. However, every night before accessing it I have to reboot it because the network is inaccessible. It seems to happen whenever the access point hasn't had any activity in a few hours.

I haven't managed to find any power management options in the GUI, and I haven't been able to find any logs either to troubleshoot the problem. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed in fixing this annoying issue?

I see this too but thought it was just me. I only use it when i am working in the garage so it doesn't get a lot of traffic on it all the time. maybe it would stay alive if it were used more? but seems like a bug

Link>Welcome!

What Mfr and Model host router do you have?
  • What region are you located?

Main Host Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations on the main host router
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

 1. Mfr and Model host router: Netgear WNDR3700v3
 2. Region: Toronto, Canada
 3. DHCP is configured on the router. Wireless always works fine when in range of router. Wireless works fine when extender is rebooted.
 4. Wireless modes enabled: 2.4GHz b/g/n auto channel, 5GHz a/n channel 153. WPA2-PSK AES on both, with the same password. "Wireless isolation" is disabled.
 5. No cordless house phones.
 6. I'm in a condo, so there are other wireless signals around (about 10 strong ones), but this doesn't seem relevant since the network works fine once I reboot the DAP-1320. It just becomes sporadically inaccessible after a few hours of inactivity.
 7. I had WMM enabled and tried disabling after seeing some posts recommending that to solve connectivity issues. Problem still occurred with WMM enabled.
 8. Router placement is away from all other devices. Once again, not really relevant. Speeds are fine when everything is running.

Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on the main host router. Set a manual channel on the 2.4Ghz radio, to something thats not being used if possible. The SSID is different between the 2.4 and 5Ghz radios?

What is the distance between the main host router and the DAP?

I will try that. Pretty sure 5GHz isn't accessible at the extender point.

Yes.

I'll look into that, but I'm almost certain this isn't it. When I say the extender's inaccessible, I mean the DAP-1320's SSID is not visible when scanning for networks. It's as if the device is off, even though it's plugged in and the light is on. Sometimes pressing the router connect button the side works to "wake it up", but more often than not even that doesn't work. If it were merely a congestion problem I expect I'd still be able to see the DAP-1320 SSID.

About 25 feet through two walls. I also had it at 20 feet through 1 wall, but this connectivity problem had me walking into other rooms to reboot the device, so it's now more conveniently located. No appreciable bandwidth reduction since it's the exact same location, just the other side of the drywall.

Yes the extender is only 2.4Ghz.

Possible try a closer distance maybe as a test.

Was a factory reset performed before and after updating FW?

I tried a full factory reset and set everything up from scratch. It's worked for a few days now without requiring a restart. I'll be back if the problem recurs, but that's a good start if anyone else is having this problem! Thanks!

I experience the same problem. I generally only use the DAP late in the evening. Connection difficulties are rare. Sometimes I am not able to connect to the DAP. After unplugging & plugging it in again, connections work fine until the next time.

Could you run thru some of the suggestions and respond back to some of the questions in this thread and maybe we can help you fix this.

I am having the same problem here. My device (DAP-1320 Wireless N300) stops working after a few hours of inactivity. It works perfectly again after plug off and plug in.
I'll try to set to factory defaults and let you know if this helps.
