getting my dgl-5500 soon.
« on: October 23, 2013, 06:59:13 PM »

alright, so i found a pretty stellar deal on the dgl-5500 and decided to snag it up in hopes of a better experience with my xbox live gaming. im currently using a motorola nvg510 as a wireless gateway through at&t. ive done countless speedtests on speedtest.net with my 12Mbps rated u-verse isp. my results have averaged with ping @ 25ms, d/l @ 10.60Mbps, and u/l @ .90Mbps via wifi on my macbook air. i stumbled upon the dgl-5500 for $167 shipped and thought id give it a try since i can always just return it. im going to be moving the nvg510 wireless gateway from my living into my bedroom and putting it into bridge mode and hooking up the dgl-5500. im going to have the gateway and router elevated on some corner wall shelfs and then have it hardwired to my xbox 360, and also my xbox one when its released on the 22nd of november.

a little background about my household. we have 6+ cellphones, 5+ computers/laptops, 2 tablets, and 2+ gaming consoles that are using the wifi. when i hook up my new setup next week. im going to try to cut down on the cellphones and computers using the wifi so i can get some better bandwidth dedicated to my xbox. are there any settings that i should try going with to be sure i get the maximum out of the dgl-5500. especially for my online gaming experience. i can hardly play online at all via wifi without severe lag or getting booted.

I'm gonna save you a whole lotta heart ache. I have the Moto NVG510 bridged to a Linksys E4200 setup in my office. This router does not have a TRUE bridge mode and you need to configure it in this manner .... watch the video. Also you need the MAC address from the NVG510 and copy that over to the DGL5500

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYROv9Fjis

There are literally forums devoted to this and ATT is aware of this, yet they refuse to update the FW on the NVG510.

Any chance you can get a ISP modem with out a gateway built in? Stand Alone modem maybe? Does your modem handle other services besides Internet or just Internet only?

Review this on initial set up on the 5500:

thanks for the bridge mode notes. i knew it wasnt just plug and play with this modem. thanks for the link. saves me some time if i read into a problem when trying to do it. as for my isp modem. thats the only one im stuck with currently. i still have to find out if i can replace my modem once i speak to a representative. but thats what im working with. have the modem/gateway moved to my room, then putting the nvg510 into bridge mode to run my dgl-5500 to it and lastly hardwire my xbox to it and then connect wifi devices. i have several questions that have me pretty curious.

1) im going to have my modem and router on a corner wall shelf within several inches of eachother and elevated roughly 5 or so feet. would there be any type of interference between the two?

2) with my modem and router elevated off the ground, im going to have my hdtv about 3 or so ft apart and then having a cat6 cable from the router to the xbox underneath the hdtv. is there a suggested distance for have a modem and router near a hdtv? because i also heard about interference between the hdtv and the modem/router.

3) and when setting up my modem and router for bridge mode. would it be best to do the 1.11B03 firmware update before or after?

I can't stress this enough, make surr you copy the MAc address from the NVG510 and transfer it to the DGL 5500.

1) im going to have my modem and router on a corner wall shelf within several inches of eachother and elevated roughly 5 or so feet. would there be any type of interference between the two?
The recommendation is that you should shut off the wireless on the NVG510, since the DGL5500 will be the principle router you will be connecting to wireless and wired. Personally I have the 510 and the E4200 sitting side by side, with BOTH wireless networks ACTIVE and NO wireless conflicts  ;D

Possibly. You can try setting it up and you find the HDTV is interferring with the DGL5500wireless, than move it in another area. Also you may want to scan the area for other WIFI

3) and when setting up my modem and router for bridge mode. would it be best to do the 1.11B03 firmware update before or after?

It appears from the new FW has some improvements/enhancements, especially the 5ghz wireless, I would update to the new FW before configuring it, remember to follow the reset instructions CLICK HERE

Like yourself, I am getting all my electronics in order for the XBOX1. As of now, it's all in place and ready to go. Literally plug and play with some config to my network and downloading my XBOX profile to the new unit and it should be hours of funtime. BF4 & COD Ghosts here I come  ;D

well i spoke to a representative about replacing my modem/gateway with a 3rd party device. and they said that would be no problem. but in all honesty i wouldnt want to spend more than $50 for a new 3rd party ADSL2/2+ modem. would that be any significant difference if it were to get a d-link dsl-2540b over the motorola nvg510. wouldnt i need to bridge both of them anyways? i only ask about the dsl-2540b since i found one brand new for $45.

We recommend bridging ISP modems if possible to let the router handle the PPPoE connection. If you can get the new DSL modem and your ISP supports it. Go for it.

Any chance of getting more Uplink speed from your ISP? Really need 2Mb for good gaming performances. I presume if your the only game then 1Mb should suffice.

FYI, there seems to be 2 Revs for the 2540B modem, A and T. Last FW release date for Rev A is 2006. There is no FW available posted as of yet for the Rev T. Not sure if any newer FW versions are forth coming. Some modems FW is handled by the ISPs as well. I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support or sales and ask them what is most recent for this modem or ask them what model model is more recent and best for your ISP before buying.

Might ask about this modem as well:
http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/modems-and-gateways/dsl-520b-adsl2-plus-ethernet-modem

Also if there is any future speed growth, say above 24Mb and 3Mb on your ISP, you'll need to review ActionTec Modems as they handle higher speeds. I don't know if D-Link has any DSL Modems that go over 24Mb and 3Mb. Ask D-Link if you phone them.

Furry,

I am a BIG fan of dlink products and love the support and community here...that is why I am here. That said, the DGL 5500 is a great gaming router, but I needed something more robust. As you probably know I have been using Netgear R7000. Thus far it has performed well and and the DGL5500 was returned. However I wouldn't mind having it in the network, provided the new FW has IMPROVED the 5ghz signal.

Perhaps you can let us knwo if the latest FW has done that???? Is the 5ghz improved??

I thought you had a 865L or an 868L at one point?  ???

The most resent version of FW seems to be good. I'm still working on some time to test it all out. We played B02 over the weekend. Gaming was good however getting full green in game bars was sporadic. Not sure if it's WiFi signal on 5500 since 1 xbox is on a bridged 865L on 5Ghz AC mode, or if ABE is interfering or SB priorities are messing around. I did notice that the initial speed test completed in the set up wizard was greatly improved. It measured 40/3. Last time it was 8/2. I still manually set 100.00 and 10.00. I need to go back and factory reset everything again and see what ABE can with with out having to set manual speeds. Overall, much improvement seen with v1.11. I'll try and find some time to test WiFi and range. There maybe some odd behavior with having mixed Wifi devices such with the 868L and 865L as having different WiFi drivers seems to be wreaking some havoc between all of the devices, even in AP or Bridge mode. I'll do some playing around with what I got and see what I can come up with. Many variables to narrow down. Haven't hand much time lately as I'm working on the house before winter sets in here. D-Link is aware of things that are going on with the 5500...I'm sending them anything I see and asking them to keep an eye out here in the forums too.

Furry,

Great memory, yep still have the 865L. I may repurpose it in the network soon. What drew me to the DGL5500 is the new GUI  and that were able to check on demand what devices were connected and how the router was prioritizing the data stream for that device. Love that!!!! Wish Dlink would have put an app out for the 5500, where we can monitor it on our phones  ;D
As always I am lurking the forums and would like to have the 5500 back in the stable of routers, please let me know how the latest FW does in regards to the 5 ghz!!!!!

Theres new FW for the 865L and they added full supported WiFi bridging too. IT's nice and works well. Just not sure if it's working well with the 5500 WiFi drivers or vs versa. I'm going to take the 5500 off line maybe this evening and put something else online while I do some isolated testing with the 5500. Ya, I do like the new UI. Were still out on SB and ABE though.  :-\

You should do some testing on the 865L and let us know how it works for you. Only thing about the 865L is the 4 DNS IP addresses it seems to hand out instead of 2, not sure why or if this is a problem or by design. I've asked D-Link to review it. Bridge mode seems to work well with the 868L though.  ;D

Ok, enough of hijacking this thread. See you on the 865L forum.  ;D
