Sorry this is so long but I've serached all over trying to find a detailed explanation of powerline setup and due to all sorts of apparently unreliable configurations and lack of sufficient guidance in the setup software I've had lots of trouble.

I have an existing powerline network with 4 D-Link 200Mbps devices and they have been working for some time.  I attempted to add a new DHP W310AV to the network but I encountered a problem.
It failed to communicate with the existing devices.

I went into the setup wizard which appears to be for setting up a hybrid connection.  I don't know if the existing D-Link DHP W306AV qualifies as a "hybrid router" (probably not) but I could not find any other setup for establishing communication with older 200Mbps devices.
I called D-Link support and was told to start the setup process then go around all the devices and press the "quick connect" button within 2 mins. I did this but NONE connected. In the end after many attempts I found this procedure only worked if only ONE other device had its quick connect button pressed. I believe the intent of this procedure was to establish the encryption key with ALL devices and I was told that the newer device may have a different key (network name). However, I think this procedure was being confused between "hybrid" setup and "normal" powerline setup.
   
So, I set to W310AV to use the "public network name" and tried the setup procedure. Still, only ONE device could be scknowledged. I gave up.
On plugging in 4 devices I found that despite the report from the setup software saying no devices were seen, they were in fact communcating. Only one other device failed to communicate and that was one that did NOT have its quick connect button pressed. So it looks like they did establish connection but the built-in setup software failed to see it.
Also in the setup on the W310AV is a screen showing a list of network devices it can see. It seems to scan but NEVER sees any other devices (yet 4 devices are happily communicating).

I went to the PC-based software for monitoring the powerline devices (viper) and it also failed to see any devices except the one directly connected to the PC.  I then loaded the Logitech equivalent monitor software and it saw the powerline devices (albeit two of them were shown with the same MAC address but different link rates!!). The next day the Logitech software showed more sensible results but the D-Link software never sees any devices.
What a shambles!  But I have some questions...
1) am I correct in assuming that the "hybrid router" setup is actually irrelevant if you simply want to connect a W310AV and some older 200Mbps devices?
2) is the correct procedure for synchronizing devices on a powerline network to a) press the connect button on one device then b) go around pressing the connect button on all other devices within 2 minutes?
3) if you missed one device in procedure 2 above, could you simply repeat the process by pressing connect button on the master and then just the newly added device, or must they ALL have the connect button pressed?
4) the public network name is "HomePlugAV" and that appears to be true of both the older 200Mbps devices as well as the newer 500Mbps so why was there any need to sync them at all?
5) Am I correct in assuming that if the first device to have its quick connect button pressed will dictate the network name and key so that all the other devices will sync to it?  If so, and if the master device has the public network name set, it should not matter which device is used as the master as long as it also uses the public network name?
6) On going to the buiit-in monitor software in the older 200Mbps W306AV devices, I see that they DO see other devices, so am I to assume there is a bug in the software in the newer W310AV device?

Wow, thanks for all the information and troubleshooting. I'm hoping you have found some sort of resolution on this.

I would recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get help and further information on this to see if all this can be solved for you.

I have an existing WHP-306AV powerline and extender all working fine. On the verbal advice of D-link I bought a WHP310AV to add to the network.

I cannot get both extenders working at the same time.

I seem able to reset the network but cannot add the second extender to that network. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Can you set up the 306AV in the same room as the main PL unit to see if they will connect?

I've tried that, and with both extenders in the same room as the PL, I am just swopping which of the extenders work.
I wondered if I could set it up manually rather than with the wizard - which just returns a fail, but don't understand the settings well enough.

I've reset everything more than once.
