D-Link 2750U, Forgotten, or lost password
« on: September 18, 2013, 04:41:02 AM »

I'm new this forum as well as new to my 2750u, though I have owned it for 2 yrs. & still don't have a clue as to settings. All I know is someone set up it up, & it worked. Seems with my age I don't necessarily want to learn anything new. However when there is a problem you want solved, you must.

A while later I noticed I was crawling with piggy-backers in range of my Wi-Fi. I went inside & thought I limited access to only my 4 devices, which seems to be holding true, & changed my password.

Lately I wanted to look at something in settings, only to realize I didn't have, or remember the log-in password. I went to the shop who built my custom desktop, & upgraded my 2008 HP laptop, as they have been helpful in the past with everything caused by me.

They said go to your svc provider, I went, they said we can't recover it, but if you have to reset the modem you'll need our password to reconnect as though it's your first time. They sent me back to the shop where I got it. I talked to their techs, the last thing I wanted to do would be to reset it not knowing anything about setting it up. & the last thing I need would be not to have svc. since I live in a foreign country. They said there is nothing else you can do, but bring it to us, they would reset it.

For the last 3 days I have been searching for a way to recover the password & avoid a complete reset. A just now I found one. A small free file I found on goggle, in less than 2 min. I had my password back. Though I don't know if I can name it according to forum rules. If I get the OK from the OP's I'd be glad to share it.

In order for it to work you must have a backup of settings stored. Lucky for me I did one after I changed the password. I am so happy to have it back, now I don't remember what I wanted change. Tried telling myself, don't worry about until I have a problem, which I wouldn't know how to correct anyway. But at-least now I know how important it is to me to start learning more about it..

You'll need to factory reset the modem as this is the only way to clear the current password out and then you'll need to reset up the modem and input new passwords that you'll need to write down for future reference. Good Luck.

Well, I here to say that a D-Link 2750U password can be retrieved by downloading & using this file, if moderators don't take it out. It's a free tool, recovered my password, without resetting the modem.

I am by far no geek, download it, followed the instructions, & had my password back in maybe 2 min.

Hmm...well, I'm glad you recovered the PW, however I'm going to have D-Link review this and see if this needs there attention. I consider this a breach in security for anyone. The only way to gain access to any device should be thru the UI or approved used WiFI passwords that users set up. Gain access via any other means could be used by un-authorized people and could gain un-authorized access to your network and private data.

This is not good. Thank you for bring this to our attention.

Hi FurryNutz, you would know better than me if this is some sort of breach, which is why I was reluctant to name the product. The only way I see it could a theft  of service is if someone were to obtain a copy of the file settings stored on their computer, & file the name, which can be saved from D-Link in the event the owner would need to restore settings. Which would also mean they already had access to the computer.

Yes, I agree if someone could access the modem simply by using the product to find a password, if in Wi-Fi range that would be a serious problem.

I'll post no more of it, until I read what you find.

Thanks DP.
