Problem connecting SMCWEBS-N with DIR657
« on: August 28, 2013, 05:52:37 PM »

I got a DIR657 to replace a really old Belking Wireless G router that died.  I had an SMCWEBS-N access point connected to the Belkin via a CAT5 cable and it worked fine and without any trouble configuring. I primarily use Macs running MacOS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

I thought I would apply the same configuration settings on the DIR657, plug it in, and be up and running.  Wrong.

Once the substitution was made, my wireless Macs were unable to access the internet through the access point. When I attempt to connect to the access point, I only get a message that says "Connection failed."

They can access the DIR657 fine.  They see the access point SSID.  I can log into the access point from any Mac  (because it's directly connected to the router via the CAT5 cable, I presume).

I've been through the configuration menus of  both devices a dozen times.  I don't know what to try next.

Is the SMCWEBS-N compatible with the DIR657?

Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

I presume it should be compatible. I might factory reset the SMC unit and set it up from scratch.

Be aware that you can run the same SSID and PW on the same frequency as the 645, however the channels need to be different, so if your using channel 11 on the 645, you need to set the SMC to channel 1 so they don't interfere. They can't run on the same channel unless the SMC can bridge or repeat. AP mode needs to have a different channel.

I recommend that you refer to the Mfr support web site for continued help and information about the SMC AP. [/list]

Thanks for the response

    >What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.<
Hardware version is A1.
    >What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.<
Firmware version is 1.01.  I tried to upgrade to the firmware version on the DLINK website twice, it went through the firmware install steps, but the firmware didn't change.
    >What region are you located?<
I'm in North America, Southern Cal.
     >the channels need to be different<
I'm already on channels 1 and 11.
     >I recommend that you refer to the Mfr support web site<
I've been all over the DLINK and SMC websites.  Nothing pertinent.

Please follow this for doing FW updates:
FW Update Process

You can refer to this to see if some of the steps can work on the SMC AP:
Turning a router into an AP.

You need to use LAN to LAN cable connection. It should work. I've connect many APs to D-Link routers in this way. Just not sure about this SMC. Ensure you are using a good working LAN cable between the 857 and the SMC.

You might contact SMC and ask them about configuration of there AP.

Problem solved by restoring SMC to factory defaults, then configuring it. Guess it got confused even through all the config settings were the same. Thanks for the assistance.
