PPTP VPN Issue
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:24:31 AM »

I got my 5500 yesterday.. copied all my settings over from my 4500 to it and most of the port forwarding works, RDP, games etc.. but VPN establishes connection and there's no traffic..  has anyone else tried it?

Do you still need to forward protocol 47 under servers?

I will test a few things after work tonight to see I can mkae it work..but this can be a deal breaker for me, my wife travels and she needs VPN access when in countries like China.

Thanks,
Artur

I would give Virtual Server a try...

I have a 5500.
Firmware Version :      1.01 , 25, Jun, 2013

Everything works peachy with my DGL 4500.. put the same settings into my 5500 and no dice.    YOu can rule out the cable side of the network and the PC in use, it all works with the 4500.      I am a network admin by trade, so i know everything is how it should be, i'm just curious if anyone else has tried PPTP with the 5500 yet?

Thanks,
Artur

We haven't seen any PPTP VPN here as of yet.

You might go ahead and phone contact D-Link support and ask for level 2 or higher and see if there is any information on this.

This is all new and were looking to help D-Link iron out the kinks.

What region are you located?
What model modem do you have?
Have you tried using Virtual Server?
Does disabling StreamBoost do anything?

Information like this helps us get a better idea of your situation and helps us give better feed back and suggestions.

Chicagoland
Arris 822g
Using Virtual Server for GRE Protocol 47 & port 1723 (PPTP) the same way I have it working in my 4500.
PPTP passthrough is enabled.
SPI & Antispoof are disabled.
I'll try disabling streamboost in a bit when she disconnects her RDP.

Ok, I've asked for some additional review and information on this. Please be patient. I hope we get some information.

Arris isn't the best modem IMO, however if it's been working. No problem there.

Keep us posted.

The Arris 822g is a solid 8x4 docsis 3 modem.    I agree tho, some of their previous offerings were really meh.. especially anything with a built in router / wireless..

Ok so here's my progress.
I disabled streamboost, this broke the ability to RDP behind the 5500.
I remote admined in and set the VPN box as DMZ, this broke the ability to remote admin via 8080, VPN still broken.

I'm at work and locked out of the device.    I am going to reset it when I get home.. and recofigure just the basics then add things one by one and test.    I don't wan't to believe the initial firmware is this buggy.. ugh.

Eeeks...ok.

Did you reboot the router and RDP devices after disabling SB?

I'll forward this to D-Link. Thanks for posting.

Ya, I'm getting worried here.  :-[

The last time I rebooted it knocked out all connectivity, including local lan.. I had to reboot it to restore full operation.   I forgot my mifi at work so I can't do any VPN testing tonight.

Aye, but when it came back up the local lan wasn't responsive.. I wasn't able to ping the 5500 from my desktop, hence why I wasn't able to remote admin into it after the restart.   It esentially needed a restart.
It was locked up somewhere in the boot up process.   I did a factory reset on it last night and will test VPN again later.

Successfully connected VPN through the 5500 after factory reset & reconfigure.
Fowarded tcp/1723 and protocol 47 under virtual servers.

StreamBoost [ON]
ABE [OFF]
Windows 7 laptop [VPN OK]
Windows 8 laptop [VPN OK]

Turned on ABE to see if there's any improvement since doing the factory reset.   VPN passthrough works with ABE both on and off.    My speedtests with SB & ABE on are now equal to speetests with SB & ABE OFF.    The factory reset has done wonders for my 5500.    If anyone is getting slower speeds with ABE i'd suggest doing a factory reset then testing again.

I'll share that information in the bandwidth thread.

So when ABE is enabled VPN doesn't work?
