645 crashing/disconnecting.
« on: June 04, 2013, 08:47:11 AM »

I've had my 645 for a couple of months now. I upgraded it to 1.03 firmware the first day and it's been fine. I also got IPv6 working but decided it didn't do anything for me other than muck up my adblocker so set it to local only.

Recently my adblocker has been upgraded so I enabled IPv6 again. I'm now finding that roughly every 18 hours I lose my connection and the router appears to be dead. I can't connect over my LAN nor by direct connection.

Is this a known issue? Unfortunately I can't tell you what's in the logs because the router is inaccessible and they don't survive a power cycle :-/

I have a static IP address but my ISP recommends I get settings from them rather than fixing them in the router.

Link>Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Does the router work with out IPv6 enabled?
Does the router work with the Ad blocking SW disabled and IPv6 enabled? It seems it was working with IPv6 enabled before the Ad blocking SW was updated?

Ensure the ISP services are still supporting IPv6 protocols and those services are working correctly.

Wired.

No and no.
Quote
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?
Sure - but I couldn't get IPv6 to work until I upgraded it.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
ISP is 'IDNet' - it's a VDSL connection but that's handled by a separate modem.
Quote
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Supplied by separate telco - that's the way VDSL is sold in the UK. It's a Huawei.

Not applicable to issue. Router works fine most of the time - it just seems ****e to crashing when IPv6 is enabled.
Quote
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
It's set. I also don't think that even with 'always on' disabled it should crash to the point where a power cycle is required
Quote
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Yeah. As I said in my original post - that appears to solve the problem. It's hardly a solution though - I bought the router because it supports IPv6. Supposedly.

It works either way. It's just that after about 18 hours it crashes if IPv6 is enabled.
Quote

Huh? The adblocking software runs on the client computers. Why would that have any impact on the router? In any case the crash happened when the computer with new adblocking software wasn't running.

Yeah, they are fine. My ISP has supported IPv6 for a while now - one of the few in the UK to do so. And in any case - it isn't that IPv6 stops working. The router crashes.

  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

This one possible condition causing the router to not work right.

I recommend doing a factory reset and configuring from scratch and enabling IPv6 gets resolved after you make sure that your NAT condition is satisfied with using NAT on the 645, meaning that the 645 needs to handle the ISP connection between the modem and router and the modem needs to provide a public IP address on the WAN side of the 645 router.

If after all this and IPv6 still crashes the router, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for level 2 or high help on this.

Keep us posted.

The modem is actually a router (HG612) but the telco - BT - disables that feature. The Huawei is the official 'demarcation point' for their VDSL service. As provided it's deliberately locked down so that you can't do anything with it. It just presents an Ethernet socket and a separate router is mandatory - it plays no part in LAN configuration so won't be interfering with the 645.

Anyway I have some more info. I put IPv6 back to 'link local only' last night and it just crashed again. That suggests it's a VPN issue. I'm working from home this week which is the first time I've done that with this router.

And the ISP Modem is supporting of IPv6 protocol? I would ask the ISP to make sure just in case. Wonder if you could try this router on a different modem or ISP, say at a friends for families place to see if the problem follows.

Are you using VPN for your home connection? This router supports VPN Pass-thru so it should work. Is your VPN a IPv6 supporting platform or just IPv4?

I had this problem when i went to 1.03 on my dir-645.

factory the router. restore 1.02
factory router again. apply 1.03
factory router a 3rd time and reset up.

it would seem 1.03 is a little iffy to install.
please note that settings saved in either 1.03 or 1.02 are not restorable to the other version. if after all that you still have problems, i would suggest rolling back to 1.02 as ipv6 is not really needed for a simple network.

And the ISP Modem is supporting of IPv6 protocol?
My ISP didn't supply the modem. It is supplied by the telco as part of the installation. Every FTTC installation in the country will have one of two models. It is doing nothing other than transferring Ethernet data to/from my premises so your question doesn't really make sense.

Anyway the problem appears to be caused by the VPN activity. I'll know more from this evening since I won't be working at home after today. I'll re-enable IPv6 and see how it goes.

It does support it. For a few hours - then the router crashes - or at least becomes unresponsive. The VPN is currently only IPv4. It's a corporate WAN and they haven't got around to support IPv6 yet.

Not all modems are the same and some modems may or may not support IPv6 so the question is relevant. I recommend you check with the Modem Mfr and specs to ensure that IPv6 is supported by the modem.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office, ask for level 2 or higher support.

Good Luck.
