Degraded Wireless after a few days of operation
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:43:37 AM »

Well, looking through this forum, it looks like I'm not the only one seeing this issue.  I'm not having as many issues as some, but this one is bugging me...

Bought an 826L about a month ago to replace my old DGL-4300.  Man, I was sad to see it die.  Thing worked like a champ for years.  But what I'm seeing on the 826L is that the wireless network access seems to degrade over time.  My cell phones seem to be the first to be affected, as they can no longer browse or connect to any internet resources.  A tablet, PS3, and laptop follow shortly after that.  It seems to happen after about 2 days of operation.  Rebooting the device brings wireless operations back to normal for a few days again.

Both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands seem to be affected, as those devices that support both have problems regardless of which wireless connection I choose.  The two machines that are physically wired to the device are never impacted.  They connect to any resources with no problems.  It doesn't appear to be any physical limitation (walls or anything), as bringing the devices into the room where the router resides makes no difference.

I never see the wireless become unavailable on the 826L.  Devices always see the SSID as available and are able to connect to the router.  They just can't get out to the Internet at that point.  I'm running v1.02 firmware, but still seeing the problem.  All QOS features are turned off as well.  Since my wired devices are never impacted, and my DGL-4300 worked fine in the same setup, all evidence points to the router as the problem.

I really like this device (absolutely love the form factor, and dual radios was a huge plus for me), but if it can't keep my devices connected, I'm going to have to buy another device.  Anyone out there have any other suggestions to try?  I'm on my second device, and both have had the problem (smoked the first one with a failed firmware upgrade trying to fix the issue).  Any suggestions would be appreciated...

As an aside, has anyone had any luck getting their router to register with MyDLink?  The wizard on the router always fails with bad password for some reason.  Even after I just logged in to the website with that same credentials...

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

So, I'm located in Kansas in the United States.  Using Comcast as my cable provider, with a Motorola SB6121 hooked up.  No other wireless routers in the home, and no known source of interference.  If there was interference, I would expect more intermittent access.  Once the connection "dies" for the wireless devices, they never come back until the router is reset.

I've performed numerous factory resets of the device to see if that helped, to no avail...

QOS is turned off on the device, and I've messed with the wireless settings to see if those help.  I'll try some of the other wireless settings to see if those help.

I never have any problems with my wired devices.  They always connect with no issues.  Just the wireless devices...

Can you turn Off the 5Ghz radio and test, then swap and turn Off the 2.4Ghz radio and turn ON the 5Ghz radio and test? Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

You have a good modem, I have this model as well. Keep us posted.
