Wireless issue with rebuilt laptop
« on: August 21, 2012, 02:07:37 PM »

I had a laptop on our small business network die.  I rebuilt it (Windows XP) and is patched and in the same OS condition and configuration as when it went down.  It can see the wireless network with excellent signal strength.  When I try to connect and enter the SSID, it displays 'acquiring ip address'.  After a few minutes, it says 'weak signal strength you may not be able to access network resources'.  There are other laptops that are connecting wirelessly with no issues.  I even tried configuring a static ip and got the same results.  When I log in to the router, the ip address range is large enough that I am not out of addresses.  When I bring the laptop home, it can connect to my home network with no issues.  I am really stumped.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Sarah

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are the wireless adapter drivers up to date on this particular LT? Using the lasted from the Mfrs web site and not the CD.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I am on A2 firmware version 1.25ne
I am in the US (TX)
I am using the latest drivers for the wireless card - I originally used the one identified by Windows Update, but I circled back to the manufacturer and they had a more recent one.  I installed that one.

All of the items under things to try I have tried.  I also had Norton turned off and the windows built in firewall service disabled.

I am running in mixed mode and auto channel width with wpa2/aes

I will try the additional suggestions and turning off all other devices tonight after hours.

Thanks.

Try running one of the other modes suggested. Seems like if all the other devices are working on this router, something on the this LT is just not quite right. Almost though. Might have to try using Windows Drivers as a last resort.

Keep us posted and good luck.

So...feel free to mock away at the human error........

I enabled logging on the router and noticed an authentication failure.  The SSID is changed every 3 months.  It had just been changed.  LT is connected now and everything works.
