Just purchased a DIR-857 on firmware version 1.00.  I'm having two different problems that I can't seem to resolve.

First, I'm not seeing the 5 GHz band being broadcast from the router.  I was using inSSIDer to determine the best channel to run on and it's not seeing the 5 GHz  band at all.  Could this be due to my wireless card?  I'm using an Encore ENEWI-2XN45 that runs in the 2.412GHz - 2.484GHz band.

Second, everytime the computer goes to sleep or is powered off, when I power it back on/wake it up, the wireless is disconnected.  I run the "troubleshoot problems" on the wireless card.  The solution is normally has something to do with not being able to find the default gateway.   I was using a DIR-655 with this same card and never had the issue before.  Any thoughts on what might be causing this.

You need a 5 GHz wireless card to detect broadcasts on 5 GHz band. Your wireless card is only capable of detecting 2.4x GHz band broadcasts.

Your PCs and devices need to support 5Ghz Wifi in order for the devices to be able to use and take advantage of the 5Ghz radio.

Have you set up a Wifi profile on the device so that everytime it comes back to ready or wakes from sleep it connects? Ensure the drivers are up to date. I would refer you to the Mfr for drivers and support on how to set up profiles and make sure that the WiFi adapter is working correctly.

Would you please be so kind as to elaborate what you mean by setting up a Wifi profile?  The drivers from the manufacturer are problematic so I'm using the latest known good driver, a Realtek (I think, not at home to verify right now).  It worked without problems with the DIR-655 so I'm a little confused as I didn't change a thing on the card properties.  I did make sure I reserved an IP address for this machine and for the machine to request an IP through DHCP.  This didn't resolve the problem.

Lastly, I wouldn't be adverse to purchasing a new card if necessary, but I'd prefer to get this one working as it should.  It is a N300 and by all accounts would be more than adequate to maximize my WAN connection.  Is there a known good N900 adapter to work with this particular router?

In windows or Realtek's WiFi management application, there might or should be some forum of profile setting so you can create a profile for each location or AP you connect to and it saves these settings. You can create a default profile so that windows always uses this same profile. I would refer you to the Mfr of this SW for more information regarding profile set up. I use this on my Mac Book Pro and each time I close the lid or it goes to sleep and I wake it, it always reconnects to the same wifi SSID I have set up.

If your trying to use your current WiFi adapter then it's bound by it's support of 2.4Ghz only. If your wanting to maximize the use of the 5Ghz radio, then you'll need to look into getting a 5Ghz WiFi adapter, Not sure if they have a replacement one for your particular PC, however DLink makes a DWA-160 USB 5Ghz WiFi adapter that does up to 300Mb only. Dlink also has DAP model like a DAP-1533 that supports 450Mb and does 5Ghz in which you could use the LAN cable connection to the PC to connect to the DAP and the DAP would connect as a bridge to the 857 and you'd get 450Mb connections to your PC.
