Did I Just get a Bad DIR-857 ?

I just upgraded to FIOS 150MB/35MB - RJ45 -CAT-5e Connection - No Coax connection for Internet and decided to go with DIR-857 after having great experience with DIR-655 on my old cablevision 20MB/5MB connection.

I think I just might have a got a bad unit since I got one of the first ones from NewEgg when they first went on sale in June. I have read ALL of the threads and my unit is experiencing a little bit of everything I have been reading so far. Not just one problem but many.

Here is my experience so far:
- My DIR-857 constantly times out and or is producing very high latency when pinging from wired or wireless PC. I have noticed the following conditions when this occurs.
A) Streaming cannot be done consistently because of the high Latency and constantly timeouts. This is with the PC and laptop in the same room - next to the DIR-857. I have tested from close and far distances
B) Web Pages take forever to load or time out all together. Everyone in the house complains.
C) Cannot access the Admin page Remotely - Constantly get the OOPS Page ! - Ughh - It works once out every 5 or 6 attempts -  I know its not a DNS issue !
D) Tested 2.4 & 5 GHz Same issue when using both Frequencies or only one at a time.
E) Cannot email to accounts with SSL/TLS outgoing mail servers - Neither could the DIR-655 !
F) Sometimes it works and Sometimes Doesn't

Here is what I tried & More for the Past week and Half and Im done...
- I have read and tried everything that Furry Nutz and others have recommended in terms of turning off certain features and turning others on Like QOS and Advanced DNS and enabling stuff like DNS Relay.
- Removing Wireless Phone Base Stations or other transmitting devices in the area , Locking the DIR-857 to a free and clear channel
- I have followed thread on Factory Reset
- Upgraded to 1.01
- Tested with a Cisco A5300 Dual-band Adapter -  Was able to reach up to 410MB on the 5Ghz channel in the same room as the DIR-857 and only momentarily when the router isnt timing out.
- Tested with Single Channel N Adapters

Sorry for the long exhausting thread but does anyone else think I should RMA this device for a new one with Newegg? My DIR-655 is working Rock Solid after all these years that I have had it and it still works strong.

Any Help/Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ralph,

IMO, yes, I would call Newegg and RMA it.  You've seen how a D-Link should perform with your 655, and you've done a ton of troubleshooting yourself and followed suggestions posted here.

Sounds like you just got a bad router.

Welcome!
What region are you located?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

After all this...RMA it.

Have you adjusted your Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU)????
