slow xbox link speed
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:21:44 AM »

i have an xbox 360 slim that i'm trying to use as a media center extender.  i bought this router to upgrade from  the fios router which only has g speeds and doesn't cut it for hd video streaming.  i have the pc hard wired with a gigabit port to the router.  if i connect the xbox on g only mode i can get 54mbps, however, if i connect using n mode, it will only connect at max rate of 11mpbs (sometimes slower).  i also confirmed this by going to the network tuner in the media center interface and by the fact that streaming doesn't work in n mode.  here are all of the solutions i've tried so far and/or settings that may be relevant (i also called tech support and spent a good amount on of time on the phone with them also)

under wireless settings i have tried no security and using wpa2 only with aes only encryption which i'm currently using.  i also tried manually picking a channel but it's currently on auto.  also tired channel with 20mhz only, currently set to auto.

i also set up the qos for the xbox as described in the sticky in this forum (this was done according to the basic setup)

under advanced, spi and anti spoofing are disabled. transmit power is high, wlan is off, wmm is enabled, short gi is enabled, ht20/40 is enabled.  wish and wps are off.  upnp is on, and multicast streams are enabled.

firmware has been updated to v1.01

i only own one other n device which is a laptop that will connect at 300mbps on 5ghz and 150 on the 2.4 band, so i know my router is capable of connecting at higher speeds.  is there anything i'm missing, or is anyone else using their xbox as an mce that has a working setup?  any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Try turning off 20/40 co-existance.
Try setting single mode N on 2.4ghz.

The xbox can only do up to 130mb i think on wifi. You could get a 5ghz adaptor and use it on the xbox. I have one on mine. Preferred xbox usage is wired however.

thanks for the quick reply.  i tried those settings but i'm getting the same result.  130mpbs would be fine, or anything greater than 54 for that matter.  right now my house is not wired for ethernet everywhere otherwise i would just stick with the stock fios router which has 100mpbs ports which are more than enough for hd streaming.  are there any other things i could try?

Sounds like ur xbox wifi is the problem. There has been many posts about xbox slim wifi not working as it should.
How far away is the xbox from the router?
Maybe some can review your router settings w you via teamviwer if your interested.

If you've got interference on 2.4GHz, there are going to be streaming problems.  In fact, limiting the band to 20MHz vs 20/40MHz will also slow things down--40MHz bandwidth means higher speeds, but chances are you've got neighbors and sometimes neighbor's routers don't play nice.

The 360's slim's wifi is a bit lacking, distinctly inferior to their externel a/g/n 2.4GHz/5GHz adapter which has the additional band that is recommended for streaming higher-def video.  I'm having no trouble at all streaming high-def to my son's Xbox right now over the 5GHz band.

Or you could consider using a powerline adapter.  This worked great in my house prior to getting this new 5GHz dual band router, and solved all my communications woes in regards to HD streaming. Be warned, however--sometimes the outlet you're at is not the one that works best for this.  D-Link makes a few of these.
