DHCP does not allocate IP address
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:04:13 AM »

Firmware: 2.0

Recently I replaced Linksys router with DIR-685 one. I am experiencing a king of "going-to-sleep' with the DHCP service. After a while no additional client receives an address, neither from wireless nor from wireline. (I am using a separate  Wi-Fi access point, the one on the DIR-685 is disabled).
It behaves so until I reboot the device. Then it happily allocates and address.

Any clue?

Thanks.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking. This will ensure each devices gets and keeps it's own IP address every time they are turned on.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

All settings you suggested in your reply were exactly as you stated. No firewall rules activated. All end devices are set to automatically obtain IP address.
Do you have any other clues?
Thanks.

Okay seems like there is a glitch, why not back-up your settings and do a "Restore To Factory Default Settings"

Then allocate the IP address......

I am currently using "Firmware Version :    2.01 ,  Wed 09 Mar 2011", router has been on for 12 days with no issue with the DHCP of 19 allocated I.P addresses.

I will try the 2.01. Do you have a link?
Thanks

It should be on the DLink web site. What region of the world are you in?
Be sure to follow the FW Update Process sticky.

If you got a NA region, the latest firmware is 2.0

Don't do step 5, due to the default settings has DHCP on by default, and your current settings is bugged.

Hi guys,

I have applied 2.01 strictly by the rules. It did not help.
I think I will try to replace the unit though it is weird that one piece of software still runs (router) and the other goes to sleep (DHCP).

Thank you anyway. I will keep you updated.

Were you able to set up reserved IP addresses on the router for your devices?

No, the reserved addresses behaved the same way as the addresses from the general pool.
Today I will try the new box.

Bad news.
I installed a new box. It did not help. Behaves a little bit differently (sometimes replies and sometimes not, which makes it unpredictable).
My guess is that since the network worked perfectly with Linksys, the problem is somewhere between the DIR-685 and another box on the network that causes the DHCP on the router to sleep.
I will turn on Debug option on the log. Will see what I fish there.

Check the cabling on the entire network. Make sure there isn't a bad wire some where as well. I recommend CAT 6 cabling.

You are right. Some devices are more sensitive to cabling flaws then others.
Regrettably I have CAT 5e which places me somewhere between 5 and 6.

Yes I've noticed this flaw sometimes. I bought a new router and right out of the box, I used the cable included. router would not work. I tried a different one and sure enough, it worked after that. Have to be careful of some in box cables.  >:(

Cat5e a good class of cable, just how well the cables are made is the question.
I buy my cables from places like monoprice.com and deepsurplus.com. Good stuff man.
