Wireless Signal Range
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:40:33 AM »

I have a DGL-4500, DAP-1525 and FIOS MI424WR connected.  The DGL and DAP are used as AP and the FIOS is my DHCP server.   My DGL is in the basement while the DAP is on my first floor.  When I go to my second floor, I only see the DGL signal which is weak.   The DAP is non existant.   Both devices are configured with same SSID but different channels to enable "seamless" roaming.  I am wondering if this is the nature of the DAP or if it seems defective.  The signal on the 1st floor is close to 100% in all areas.  This is suppose to be the new AMPLI device to zero in on your device and give signal for "whole House Coverage".

The DGL and DAP are configured to use 5GHZ range since my FIOS router handles the 2.4 range.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Have to remember that 5Ghz is best in line of sight, with out any walls and floors that impact attenuation of the signal since it's such a high frequency. I would use 2.4Ghz if used between walls and floors. If you need to stream HD video on 5Ghz, i would recommend keeping the AP device closest and on the same floor as the streaming device that your using to stream with. I've noticed that my boxee boxx can't seamlessly stream BD file content over 2.4Ghz and doesn't support 5Ghz. It works on everything else. So running 5Ghz at my house is not a high priority. I only have one device that supports 5Ghz and thats my Mac Book Pro.

Thank you Furry.  I will take your suggestion and switch my Mac Book Pro to the 2.4 GHZ when on my second floor since that has a completely different SSID.

Still makes me wonder though how my DGL reaches the 2nd floor from the basement but the DAP will not reach the second floor from the 1st floor.

Things that make you go HMMM

Thanks again

Let us know how 2.4Ghz works. Interested to know. I would also maybe swap places with the DAP and 4500 and see if you notice anything.

The 2.4 worked great.  I decided to give the 5 GHZ another shot.  I maneuvered the router and AP AND now I have signal all over my house.  Thanks for all the input.  The DAP works great.
