Xbox, VOIP, and "Enable Multicast Streams"
« on: May 16, 2011, 08:57:32 AM »

Hello all.

I have a basic understanding of some router settings, port forwarding, DMZ, etc....

However I'm a little lost. I've started working from home, and needed to change from my DIR-615 to DIR-655 due to my company's VOIP requirements.

Upon switching routers, media streaming was immediately broken to my Xbox 360. None of the regular troubleshooting would solve the issue, until I eventually found the setting "Enable Multicast Streams", and it fixed my 360 issues. I'm not familiar with this setting and have never used it before.

Come Monday morning, I found that with this setting enabled, I cannot hear through the speaker of my handset. I can actually hear the dial-tone, but after a call connects (or on any incoming call) I cannot hear anything. The other end can hear me fine, however. When the option is unchecked, everything on the phone works fine.

I don't have a lot of details on my VOIP setup, so I realize you guys don't have a ton of info... but I was wondering if this is a common issue, and is there a workaround? Or is there maybe a way I can disable Multicast Streams during business hours? Or make an easy macro that enables/disables this feature when necessary?

I use streaming to my Xbox constantly, so it's quite an inconvenience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

Edit: I should add that my phone and 360 are both WIRED connections.

Thanks, unfortunately non of that seemed to help media streaming work without "multicast streams" being enabled.

Yes, Multicast fixes my Xbox streaming, but for some reason breaks the VOIP I need for work. That's what this whole issue is about unfortunately. I can get both working independently, just not together. I was hoping to find a workaround.

What VoIP service do you use?
What ISP service do you use? Calbe, DSL or other?
Is this VoIP service thru the ISP as well?
What ISP Modem do you have? Built in router or stand alone?

Seen issues with VoIP and these routers.

It's PBX hosted through a company called ComCanada.
Internet is Rogers Canada (Cable)
I'm using the DIR-655 because that's what my VOIP requires. I never saw/needed this Multicast option on my old DIR-615.

I do have a modem/router Hybrid from my ISP, but it's just in bridge mode, because of the VOIP router requirements.

I was just hoping I could "schedule" multicast to be off during 9-5, or an alternate setting that allowed streaming to work without that option checked.

Are you using Advanced DNS Services? Try Off
DNS relay enabled?
Set Firewall settings to off or EndPoint Independent?

Specifically the VoIP requires a DIR-655? Have you called the VoIP provider and ask them about this? I presume that if they said that you required this particular modem of router that they would be more specific and know about getting it set up correctly.

Place the VoIP device in the DMZ on the router...

Let us know.

That was it!

Setting both UDP and TCP endpoint filtering to "endpoint dependent" allows my streaming to work without multicast streams enabled.

FYI, the default settings were:

UDP - Address restricted

TCP - Port and Address restricted

Thanks!
