Schedule - Advanced Network Filter - not working?
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:41:49 PM »

Perhaps I'm doing this incorrectly, but I would like to disable internet access to my nephew at 2230 each night.  (I've read a post that it won't carry over through the night - but that's fine).

So I added his network card's MAC to the Advanced Network Filter - do not allow access to network - and applied a schedule rule called "bed time" that starts at 2230.  However, it doesn't work!  He's able to access the internet despite it being after 2230.

So, I'm asking:

1. Am I doing this correctly?
2. If not, how do I basically cut off internet access at 1030pm each night to a particular MAC?

Thanks.

I know that this sound stupid on the mac pull down menu did you set to turn mac filtering on and deny all computers and check the box for the rule, as I have just tried and it worked ok for me also you did save settings. This was on a wireless setup which I presume you are using. All the best M

I have it set to ALLOW all MACs in my list and found out that it allows them regardless of whether the MAC entries are enabled (checked) or disabled (unchecked).  Of course I am not using any schedules and all entries are set to allow always so maybe the check box means nothing???

However, it does seem to restrict any device NOT in the list from connecting.  So, all in all, it doesn't really matter to me as long as it doesn't allow devices I don't know.  Just thought it was strange that I forgot to enable the entries and after clicking save settings theoretically I should have been locked out.  My previous drive only applied MAC restrictions to wireless devices so I did like that I should be able to restrict wired devices as well but now I'm not sure based what I've read in this thread.

Lastly, it seems like it should go without saying but they need to add a "name" filed to each entry so you know what each device is.  Having a list of hex id's and not knowing which one belongs to a device doesn't seem very organized and adds a layer of pain if I have to walk upstairs just to identify the MAC addy of the machine I want to restrict/allow.

Does the filter work if you set up a schedule and apply the schedule to the filter?
What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
Fiber
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?
Actiontec MI424WR for Verizon FiOS - http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=189
p.s. DIR-685 has fixed IP from Actiontec router and is the DMZ.

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Did this as well as just static private IP's outside of DHCP range
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Yes, filled in manually.  Also tried common public DNS like googles servers, not sure how this has anything to do with MAC filtering though outside of just additional recommended practice I suppose?
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Had this disabled and still wasn't working but my general internet browsing was until I tested this again today.  Now for some reason, when I disable this, even with manual entry of my DNS servers, internet connection seems to time out, even to common sites like google and yahoo.  I tried rebooting router with no luck and just re-enabled this function and now everything is working again...except the MAC filtering.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.
This only works when the above is enabled so that is a bit conflicting.  A popup even says when disabling this feature it disables the advanced dns as well.

All in all, none of those methods worked for me.  I just gave up and disabled MAC filtering altogether.  Strange, this routers is very finicky and it seems as though one minute something is working and then another it isn't or vice versa and only sometimes rebooting the router fixes the issue until it surfaces again.

Advanced DNS Service should be disabled.
If Primary and 2ndary DNS are filled in with ISP DNS addresses, DNS relay should be enabled and work well. Works for me. Need to make sure that the Devices are set up for auto obtain IP and DNS addressing. It should not conflict.

Yeah, for some reason it wasn't working.

Disabled advanced dns but left dns relay enabled and put both isp dns servers in and released and renewed my pc configured with reserved dhcp.

I then verified my nic showed the isp dns servers and attempted to ping from os cmd prompt after browser attempts timed out.  Ping did resolve name but resulted in time outs.  Put back to enabled advanced dns and released and renewed again and all is working.  Somethings definitely screwy with this router.

Maybe I'll factory reset again and then try it again and post results.

Ya, Advanced DNS should not be required for it to get internet.
I'd be willing to teamviewer.com in and take a look at your settings for ya.

Yeah, was able to disable it and everything is working with my ISP dns servers but this router is definitely screwy with mixed results.  Tech support is going to replace the unit.
