Hi everyone, I have a question about updating firmware.

I have version 1.03 installed and would like to update to 1.04 and then to 1.05 when the final version is released.
I've been having problems with the fans speeding up and the system locking up.

Is it really necessary to backup your files to another location before updating?
I have a Raid 5 configuration with about 5 TB used.
Backing up 5 TBs for every firmware release is a major hassle, and version 1.05 will be released soon and then I'll have to backup again!

Has anyone updated from 1.03 to 1.04 without backing up first?
Did you lose data or have any problems?

Thanks!

Firmware updates should have no impact on the integrity of your data or RAID. That said, you should always maintain a backup of your critical data. RAID 5 provides data redundancy, but is not a substitute for a second physical copy of your data.

Thanks JavaLawyer, Looks like I need to buy a new HD before I do the update. :( Better safe than sorry.

Glad I could help. It's always a good idea to maintain a current backup of all critical data.  It's not uncommon for people to confuse RAID 5 as a backup schema.
