Constant dropping

My dgl-4500 is dropping at least twice a day.  Most of the time I cannot access the router when I try to log into its IP adress.  It's driving me crazy! i'm a student and I need the internet.   I'm running firmware 1.21, I've tried to update it but I get an error.  What have you guys done to make this router stay connected? I don't play games, I just use it for surfing and netflix.

What is your ISP service? cable or dsl?
What ISP modem do you have? Is it a stand alone modem or doe it have a built in router?

How are you connecting to the 4500? wired or wireless?
If wireless, what wireless mode are you using? Mized? Try single mode G to test.

Try changing the Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

What is the error you are getting when updating? Are you unpacking the zip file and uploading the .bin file?

I would do the above meantioned before trying to update FW.

I want to focus on that first. You say most of the time, what happens when you can't? Are you on a laptop and is the wireless kicking out? That log looks like just blocked traffic, some of it NEEDS to be block. IE,

Is your SPI blocking port 1864 which is a known backdoor for Trojans. I COULD be wrong on that, but atleast it was. Not to alarm you though, theres all kind of bad stuff out there, your router is doing its job.

I use comcast, it's a motorola modem, not sure of the model.  I use wireless to connect, running in mixed mode, G and N.  When I can't access the router it's through wireless.  I'll try unzipping the file to update, I don't think I did that.

I would first change it to G only and see if that helps.  Also what kind of wireless signal are you getting? When the wireless kicks can you still see your network?

I can't see anything when I get disconected.  There are probably seven other wireless networks in the area.  No cordless phones in the house.

Can you try switching from Mixed G and N to single G mode at 2.4Ghz and see if you get disconnected.

What HW version is your 4500?
There was some issues with v1.21 FW on some routers couple years back as it would randomly hang the router. I noticed this on my A1 4500 and since then updated.

I just bought my 3rd 4500 which is A2 now and came loaded with v1.21 FW and currently using it and loving it.

I uploded 1.23 firmware and changed wireless from N and G to G.  Anything else you guys can reccomend?  If it remains stable I'll try switching back to N and G.

Wait, you can't see anything in your area? And theres other networks? That moves the issue away from the router completly and into your computer. Try:

Start > Run/Search/Start Search > DEVMGMT.MSC

Click on the arrow or + to open "Network Adapters"

Right click on your wireless adapter and click on properties

Look for any tab mentioning Power Managership or the like. Disable any option that allows the computer to turn off or power down the wireless card.

Click on the advanced tab. Look for any option that mentions Green mode, or Power conserve mode.

Hi community,

First I knew there was a past issue on older FW I believe that the router was known to drop out often over the course of a day. I too had this issue but most resent FW seamed to have fixed the issue. But sadly my router is dropping all the time again (so far today 4 times). And without the wireless even tuned on. So I'm confident this is not a wireless issue but rather the router issue.

My ISP is COX and I'm on highest tier package they offer.
Modem is a Scientific Atlantic (witch remains with internet)

Also this morning as it has consistently interrupted me and my one employs work and then troubleshooting we stopped the FTP and Email Client on my server here at my home office. Then stopped all port forwarding and also stopped ports thought servers firewall and still problem protists. Seams to be completely random, no one site or action triggers the dropping.

So for now I guess I will go high jack the house router and then the kids and wife be pissed in about a hour when they get home and no internet. Mean while I'm playing catchup from troubleshooting and having to re download large files from my general contractor.

What FW is currently loaded and what did you update from?
What HW version is the 4500?
What devices are you using to connect to the 4500?
I presume COX is cable or is it DSL?

Are there any logs on the 4500 denoting these drops?
Are there any logs on the ISP modem denoting any issues?

How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?
If wireless, what wireless modes are you using? Try single mode G only to test?

Is QoS set up? Disable to test.
Is Firewall set up? Try using Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

Ensure Primary and 2ndary DNS ip addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/manual
Ensure DNS relay is enabled.

Turn off WiFi Protected Setup.
Disable Short GI.
Disable WISH for now.

Settings to play with to see if they effect anything: uPnP, Enable Multicast Streams, Extra Wireless Protection.


It's recommended to set all devices for static IP reservation on the router and auto obtain IP address on the devices...ease of managing and they all have there own IP addresses that don't change.
Let us know if the other router exhibits any drops.

Any chance you can take the 4500 to a different network and see if this issue tracks?
