can i have two desktop computer connected to my dir 655 router
« on: February 15, 2011, 06:42:43 AM »

i put the dlink disk in the second computer to install the router and i followed the instructions and i connected the computer to number 2 on the router cause my other computer is connected to number 1.  when i tried to sign onto the internet nothing happened and i got a message on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen saying something like local network cable unplugged.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need to check all the LAN cables to make sure they are in good working condition. Swap out cables to test.

You don't need to use the CD to set up the router. You can log in to the routers web page and set up items for use. I recommend setting up Static IP reservations for all of your connected devices. Makes it easier to trouble shoot and each device will have it's own IP address that will not change.

Also you should only have to setup the router once. You don't need to run the setup CD on every PC you connect, there are no drivers required for the router to work. That is assuming your NIC is working OK. Double check your cables, PC's go on the LAN connections and Iternet into the WAN connection.

Your Cable or DSL modem connects to the WAN jack on the router. Your PCs then connect to the LAN jacks on the router. The settings on one PC should not effect the other unless you have setup static IP addresses. Reset the router to defaults via the reset button on the back or by logging into the router and doing it though the tools system menu. Then see if everything works. If you have INTERNET on both PC's then set your passwords on the router for login and secure your wireless. If you don't use the wireless function consider just turning it off. Does your ISP require a username and password for INTERNET access? If they do you will have to set that up in the router.

my isp is AOL and they didnt give me a username and password i had to think of a username and password myself.  when the second computer is connected to the router it doesnt show the connection in the network connection section in control panel.

If you connect that PC directly to your DSL modem does it work? Do you then get internet? Did you try swapping network cables between PCs as suggested?

DID YOU TRY A DIFFERENT NETWORK CABLE ON THAT PC? If its saying that the network cable is unplugged, either the cable is bad, or one of the jacks is faulty. Make sure there is no dust or lint or foreign objects in either of the network jacks, and no bent or broken pins. Also look at the network cable your using to see if its damaged. Is it a store bought cable or did some one ,make it for you. Try plugging the PC into jack 3 or 4 on the router. It doesn't matter what jack you use as long as its one of the LAN jacks.

I would also try a different LAN Card in the PC as well. Seems like this is PC hardware problem possibly.  ???

I would also have a neighbor or a close friend help you out. I presume that if the Network card is changed out that the 655 router and PC will connect correctly and work well. Not all routers have problems and people will say anything to sell you something.
