DIR-615 Random Unnecessary Reboot / Reconnect to the Internet
« on: December 20, 2008, 07:13:56 PM »

I have two PC's running Microsoft Vista SP1 both WIRED to the router. The router randomly and automatically reconnects itself to the internet even though the internet is still working which means (on the LED status of the router) the globe icon turns red (no internet connection) while all the LED lights disappear (probable reboot) but my cable modem is still working (confirmed it by it's LED lights while the router does its issue and I also called my ISP about it and it's the router's fault they say. Also, I tried connecting the cable modem directly to one of the PC and it didn't have any problems.)
Here is my info about the DIR-615 router.

Please keep in mind that the computers are both WIRED to the Router and the Router is directly WIRED to the Cable Modem.

Sometimes the Triangle-within-a-circle LED Status light just lit up and doesn't blink which makes the internet connection unusable and I have to replug the router.

Note: I didn't find anything in the LOGS just the [INFO] about blocked connections to the internet since it is restarting.

What could be the right configuration settings for me that would stop the disconnect reconnect internet problem and make my router STABLE?

Reboots happen when something triggers it, something stops responding, something gets too high an error rate, etc..   I find that your settings are mostly already taking care of most of my usual suspects.

Even though you're not using wireless, change Channel Auto Scan from Enabled to a particular channel.  This will prevent wireless restarts associated with finding a more available channel.  It could be that on a 615, the wireless restart restarts the entire unit (it doesn't work that way on my 655).  So setting this instead of leaving it at automatic gives it one less excuse.

If you have no intention to use the wireless, then turn it off.  Not only do you remove some number of things that can go wrong, you remove the drain on CPU and memory resources.

All your router settings is pretty much set, RMA would be the next step.

I have seen this on my own DIR-615 (B2) router.  Problem is with the environment in your "home."  Cordless phones, microwaves and neighbour router can cause interference.

I've had that troubled for some time now and the only solution I could find was to get rid of the cordless phone. I bought a 6GHz cordless phone (a good investment) and the router has been up 35 days straight. Prior to that the router would drop out at least every second day. The phone did not have to ring to cause it to drop out, as the cordless is always polling the base.

The router I have serves two Mac's, a printer, a PS3, an iPod (all wirelessly) and a wired PC.
