Annoying Issue with DIR-655
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:43:08 AM »

I've made a post about it on DSLReports.com and attempted to have the issue troubleshooted there, but nothing they suggested worked. This is my last attempt before I return both the router and adapter. I don't want to repost everything that was gone over so to make it easier I'll just link you the thread.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21291938-DLink-Wireless-DIR655-Issue

Basic Facts:
Direct Connect from Modem to PC = Amazing Connection
Modem to DI-604 to PC and Game Consoles = Amazing Connection
Modem to DIR-655 to DWA-552 and Game Consoles = Slowed Connection (Unable to host games without delay being present)

I actually posted here awhile ago. This is when I first purchased and installed the adapter/router. I've been having problems ever since.

Hi,

Find and Install the Atheros driver for your adapter rather than the DLink one....  not sure what DLink does...but my son's pc likes the atheros driver LOTS better....

See if that helps....

I did update my network adapter's drivers a few hours before posting this original thread. Although I thought it would help, it unfourtunetly didn't. =(

I'm so puzzled.

Eminence257,

What utility are you using? If you're using the D-Link utility, try uninstalling it completely and remove the drivers. Then re-install the latest drivers ONLY. Do not run the setup file.

I uninstalled everything on my computer that had to do with my DWA-552. I then went ahead and reinstalled the adapater with the latest Atheros drivers (v7.6.0.239). Everything looked smooth so I went ahead and tried to host again. My connection dropped, picked back up (Never allowed me to access my routers control panel or internet), and dropped. This went on until I rebooted the router and all the settings went back to default.

Edit: I also want to add that I have no problems whatsoever with my Game Console's and their connections. This is only my computer. So I'm under the assumption that it has something to do with the DWA-552/Router Settings.

Edit: I can host, but my games have horrid chop.

Eminence257,

What are your wireless settings set to? Ensure your channel is locked to a specific channel (not auto), try 802.11 mixed n and g only, channel width to Auto 20/40MHz and WPA encryption with AES cipher type. See if that makes a difference.

After doing almost everything I could think of I got the problem half fixed. It seems that all of my hosted games still lag for people but only a good portion of the people will lag while the other players don't expierence it at all. I pinged a few times in one game (for example) and 6 out of the 10 had 400+ ms, one player even timed out. But the other four oddly enough had below 30ms. I know it has nothing to do with location, because my friend who lives 45mins from me was one of the people with 400+ms. I just can't figure it out, but it's making it imposible for me to do anything but join games.

Eminence257,

What firmware version are you running on the router? And what game are you experiencing this issue with?

Warcraft III and I'm hosting with Listchecker.

I have tried it with multiple firmwares. I currently have 1.11 installed.

Eminence257,

How does your wireless environment look like? If you have any 2.4ghz devices such as cordless phones, try turning off the base as that may cause interference.. Also try setting your router to 802.11g mode only and see if these makes a difference.

Not to bring back an old topic, but the issue is still there and I want to see if I can fix it the second time around.

To answer the last question, yes I do have a 2.4GHz cordless phone set of which the base sits right next to the router and cable modem. However even when the device is powered off I still see this issue.

I noticed something kind of weird that didn't happen before, but now always does. I'm not sure when it started, but I can't figure out why I thought it was normal all this time. When I'm downloading and my speeds reach over 1.0mpbs on the download window, my computer will start to lag and slow down as if the RAM is getting over used. However as soon as the download says complete, all goes back to normal. What is causing this?

I've read a few threads on here and stumbled acrossed an interesting tool. To add to the information I have already posted there is this:

The spiking happened roughly every 60seconds. My ping would go from a 60-110 constant to an 8,000 spike that would last seconds. At the time of running this program all I was doing was letting my computer sit idle, I'm curious what would happen if I was hosting a game.

Edit: Heres what happens when I host a game:

Edit2: So I decided to reformat my hard drive and start fresh. I installed the most up to date drivers for all my devices including the DWA-552 as well as updated the firmware on my DIR-655 router to 1.31NA. It seems the issue is still there. I've noticed though that when I download files via the internet (1.5MB/Sec speeds) my CPU usage sky rockets from 9% to 55-70%. This is when my computer becomes choppy. I'm assuming this has something to do with my hosting aswell

Check your PCI bus latency settings in BIOS and see if there's anything there you can adjust if you're comfortable with doing that. I would also check to see if you have any processes causing conflict with the adapter.
