Getting syslog working with the DGS-1100-16
« on: July 17, 2016, 11:40:55 AM »

I initially ran into some problems with the lack of clarity in the online help and firmware gui wording.    Thought I would pass along how to get this working.

Under the firmware menu tree System->System Log->System Log Settings :  set both options to Enable

Under the firmware menu tree System->System Log->System Log Server Settings : enter the IPv4 address of your syslog server, leave the UDP port default at 514 (unless you have a very specific reason not to), set the severity to ALL and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) set the facility to Local 7

That last part is the undocumented part, that the default facility for the router itself to log is Local 7.   This is familiar to folks coming from Cisco land, but if you are SOHO or coming from consumer equipment it's not going to be obvious.  D-Link should have at least thrown a (Default) next to it in the menu to help.

The purpose of these facilities is vaguely explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syslog#Facility

@FurryNutz could D-Link create a forum area dedicated to the DGS-1100 series?   Posts pop up in several other switch model forums since there is not one.

Thanks for the info Dr, I'll ask D-Link about creating a forum for the 1100 series.

Hope this helps future users.
