DNS 343 Trust Certificate
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:57:10 AM »

The Trust Certificate on my DNS343 has expired (8/7/2014)
How do I obtain and update the new certficate?
My guess would be a FW update, however...
It is a shame because the unit itself works as expected.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this before updating. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I appreciate the quick response.

I assume you want me to tell the truth. On that basis I have contacted support.
D-Link does not support DNS-343 as it is no longer a current product.
If I pay the $29.99 plus tax they will tell me officially that they no longer support DNS-343 and do not have a solution.

I stated my case that I could not be the only purchaser of a DNS-343 with this problem.
D-Link should have a solution.  A minor FW update seems reasonsable.
Updating a Trust Certificate cannot be too diffcult.

I use Filezilla to access the DNS-343.  FZ will not let me ignore the expěred trust certificate.
It is all or nothing.

Again I appreciate uyour assistance.

Ok, was just to ensure that you get correct help and information due to the sensitivity of DNS and data, I didn't want you to un-necessarily update for no good reason. I presume that FZ maybe incompatible as I presume you keep it up to date. I wonder if you used an older version of FZ if you could avoid having to update.

If you choose to update FW, please follow the FW update process found in the ShareCenter FAQ. Please be wired with a PC to the DNS and or wired connection thru a rotuer or switch. Disable any browser security add-ons and PC security SW temporarily while updating. This will ensure no interferences.  ::)

I appreciate the help.

I am at the current Firmware level 1.05

The inability to access the DBS-343 from the internet by FTP is a new feature.
That is it has worked for several years which leads me to conclude that the FW itself is fine it is just the expired Trust Certificate.
The Trust Certificate was good for 2008 to 2014.

What we need (All of us with the problem) is a patch in FW format that patches the Trust Certificate information.

I have patched from version 1.0 to 1.05  So I am comfortable with the process.

While it is not really relevant today, I have patched programs in machine code at a computer switch panel.

If D-Link provides a solution I will buy into it.

Ya, not sure if v1.06 will provide you a solution.

The other moderator is not available at this time however soon as I get a hold of him i'll have him review this and give his suggestions and information.
Please be patient.

Just curious, is there any way to tell FZ to not look at certificates? Just wondering. IF this is for SFTP then maybe not. I don't use FTP much.  ::)

I use SFTP to my Web Hosting systems.
In case of the DNS-343 I have been using FTP and it is FTP that is failing due the expired Trust Certificate.

In my logic it would not makes sense to provide a fix for a known fatal problem more six months after it appeared.

However, it appears that it is simply an oversight.  In that case I should not have been the first to experience the issue.

I am willing to help in testing a fix if we get that far.

Ya, And if the 343 is no longer being developed if it's been phased out, then not sure if any FW updates would be forth coming.  :-\

Unless I am confused I think 1.06 is in beta test.

IT is a beta. However that was 2-3 years ago...no sure why nothing was officially released. I presume the EOL time frame may have been one factor. Maybe worth a try.  :-\

The only change in FW v1.06 is the addition of support for FTP server passive port configuration.  Keep in mind that FW v1.06 was released in 2012.  I have two DNS-343, both of which are running  FW v1.05 for 2.5 years (and counting) without issue. If you do decide to upgrade your FW, you do have the option to regress to an earlier version.

Please make sure you backup your data to another physical device before performing any critical updates/fixes. If your DNS-343 is configured in a RAID configuration, please keep in mind that RAID provides redundancy, but is NOT a backup.

I tested FW v1.06 on one DNS-343 for the purposes of offering support and subsequently moved back to FW v1.05, which I found to be more stable. Additionally, the changes to FW v1.06 did not provide any added value for my use case -- if it's not broken, then don't fix it! The "b" identifier after the firmware version number is short for "build", not "beta". That said, Firmware v1.05 is the version that has had the widest distribution and seems to be the most stable, it's also the first FW version supporting 2 TB AFD (advanced format) HDDs, which is critical if you're looking for a replacement 2TB HDD that's supported by the unit.

D-Link does not support DNS-343 as it is no longer a current product.

Yes, the DNS-343 has been EOL for a couple of years now. While the DNS-343 was active, there was a good deal of activity on these boards, so there's a wealth of information to be mined if you take the time to search.

The DNS-343 was subsequently replaced by the DNS-345, which will itself be trumped by the soon-to-be-released DNS-340L.

I am looking for a solution to the terminated trust certificate.
The unit works well except for the inability to access it from the web.

I am tryng to get D-Link´s attention!

I had no problem recommending D-Link products but the swift kick in
the technical groin is enough to make me assume I will be kicked again.

One kick is enough.  I will definitely look elsewhere next time.

D-Link either has no understanding of the technial issues or is
knowingly shafting their customers for whatever perverse reason.

I am trying to bring the situation to their attention.

I would pay for the service for a solution.
The problem is I have zero assurance that a solution would be available.

The work would definitely not be complicated or conveluted.
It is simply replace the Trust Certificate data in a FW update.

Just to be clear, would you buy another storage product for D-Link with
the expectation it will drop dead in the future because the manufacturer
failed to understand the ramifications of their inactions?

Not I!

I would like to turn this Trust Certificate negative into a positive.

To whom can I speak to ensure that D-Links understands the problem?

I will pay for a service call and help D-Link test any fix they develop.

Best I could do is pass your question forward and see what I get back.  Please keep in mind that the final firmware update for the DNS-343 was approximately 3 years ago as D-Link no longer actively supports this model.  Also, the DNS-343 was released ~8 years ago, which is quite old for a consumer electronics product.
