Notifications : Verify Email always comes back as FAILED
« on: August 18, 2014, 06:11:34 AM »

I've setup my Notifications to send me an email when things go wrong But i cannot get it work. When i press the test button it always comes back as Failed !

i've double checked and triple checked my;

User Name - <login name>
Password - <password>
Port - 25 ,as setup in my email accounts
SMTP Server - mail.<provider>
Sender Email - <one of my email addresses>
Receiver Email - <my required email address>
Secure Connection - none,as with email accounts

Is there anyway to check some logs and reason for the failure ?

==============

Additional, i just upgraded my Firmware but it didn't fix the problem.

Thanks

Why are you using one of your email addresses as the sender email?

Normally that should be something that identifies the unit when you receive an email showing a problem.  We use something like dns345@backoffice.com.

Thanks for the response ivan.

i've tried that email address you provided but it still didn't work.

This smells like a security wall problem but a DNS-345 shouldn't have any security walls ? i connected my DNS-345 to my DSL-2740B Router, maybe my router is blocking it ?

==============

Additional, i just tested it after turning OFF all my security wall and Microsoft Security Essentials, result = STILL doesn't work !

I really need to see a log on the actual error that's occuring, which piece of data is failing. please help.

That email address is really not necessary, it is a convenient way to indicate just where the email is from.

Do you run your own mail server?  If so you should be able to look at the transaction logs to see if the DNS-345 is sending to the server.  If, on the other hand, you are using your ISP or a third party email service getting at the logs would be almost impossible.

Since you can send emails from your PC there is nothing wrong with your general setting of the router.  The one question one of my service engineers asked; is the DNS-345 on a fixed IP address and does that IP address have port 25 open?

Other than that no one had any bright ideas, sorry.

No, the DNS-345 has varying IP address, depending on Reboot of my DSL-2740B.

How do i check if Port 25 is open ?

Since you are using DHCP then port 25 should be open to all the IPs in the DHCP range.

Another thing to check:  You show, SMTP Server - mail.<provider>.  Are you sure it is mail.<provider>.com and not the more usual  smtp.<provider>.com?

Have you set the Username and Password to that of your mail provider, and not for the NAS? That is what your mail provider will expect. You might also need to check that the email address you are using as the sender's email address, will authenticate through your email provider.

For example, if your normal email is joe.bloggs@myprovider.com, then your mail provider will only accept that with the associated Username and Password combination. You won't be able to use dns.345@myprovider.com for instance, as it will be an invalid address for the Username/Password combination. If you're running your own mail server, then the email address can be anything you like, as long as your mail server is given a correct set of Username and Password details.

If that's the case, then the sender address and the recipient address might need to be the same.

Edit: I have just tried testing this through my own mail server, but (and I am not shocked to say this), it only allows a Username that is a maximum of 31 characters long. My domain name is 21 characters long on its own. It must be the only device I have ever seen, that imposes a character limit on email addresses. [insert facepalm smiley here]
