SOLVED DIR-816L login password no longer working

Hi everyone,

All of a sudden my login password stopped working on my D-LINK DIR-816L.
I have read and read and read all about this problem and have tried everything, still not letting me in the router.

I am not talking about the wifi password,
I want the login password so i can make changes to the configuration.

I tried holding the reset button for 10 seconds numerous times, router resets to factory config, but the password does not.

I used every browser I can think of! Windows 7, windows XP, no antivirus, no browser addons.

The user name should be Admin (can't change it if I wanted to) and the password should be blank.
I even tried updating the router using the emergency method and it worked, but did not change the password
so I still can't login.

I have the latest security patch for this device listed in this forum.
I only updated the firmware because the password is not working, and still it does not work.

Is there an emergency reset for the password to bring it back to factory config?

I thought loading new firmware would bring the configuration back to default.

I don't want to have to buy a new router.
Everything is working on default settings after factory reset EXCEPT the login password.
So i can never make changes to this router.

my Hardware version: B1
Firmware version: 2.06
I am in North America.


edit: I solved the problem. in the manual it mentions to hold the reset button for 10 seconds. that is not correct. I held it for one minute and then it finally worked. Reset to factory settings including password.
I hope someone can help me.

What browser are you using? Try IE11 in compatibility mode, FF or Opera?
Be sure to clear out the browser cache before entering the routers IP address.

Holding the reset button for 10-15 seconds should fully reset the router back to defaults and the log in will be Admin and the password will be blank.

Please don't edit your original post with new information. Please post a new reply so we can see the progression of information, and were notified when you update your information. Hard to see when the original post has just been edited. And please give feed back to questions presented. The 10 second reset should all thats needed. Or hold the button until the power LED starts to blink.
