Can you get another router to test to see if similar thing happens?
the previous router (ASUS RT-N10 with DDWRT FW) did not behave like this at all

as for the settings, there's not much to verify, I reset to factory defaults, entered the PPPoE account and password and set the port forward I need and finally set the WPA2 password for the wireless

I will reset to defaults once again ..
but man, I'm bummed out by this .. even replaced the router

I understand the frustrations. It would be a good test to see if the problem follows if you can test in a different location.

Lets see if M can come back and respond to this. I think you and him need a one on one.  ::)

I can't really test it somewhere else, my sister has cable modem - different town, different ISP
and I can't knock on doors on my neighbors and ask them to test my router

----

reset the router to factory defaults and made the least amount of changes, just to get the systems going

no, sorry ... this isn't working
it's degrading even faster than rev B did  :(

what do I do, what do we do?

since you guys haven't replied back to this, I started posting and asking around various forums
turns out that one of the reasons rev A degrades faster than rev B is that A has only 16Mb of RAM compared to B's 32Mb

some even suggested that turning off the firewall is a "fix" for this issue - but that gravely defeats the purpose of having a router in the 1st place
will do that in my next reboot and will be back with results

---

right now I'm testing to see if manually clearing the log every day has any impact on router's stability

Can you disable the log at all? It seems like even if the log is enabled, it's not clearing out old values or over writing older logs and getting stuck.

no, there's no option to do so

from what I observed and also stated before, after it reaches the 20 page limit, it doesn't overwrite itself but continues to fill the memory until it breaks

ok .. what do I do?

---

just to be clear, I have 7+ years experience in tech support - I'm not exactly your average Joe
maybe it's something I missed, but to have to 2 different devices behave roughly the same way .. that's not a coincidence

---

can it be turned into a debug unit via a FW update?
can you guys build a custom FW with disabled log function? or include an option to disable it?

I am willing to test this out and get to the bottom of this issue

I recommend having M remote in to your PC and have him check router settings as a suggestion. Keep us posted please.

yes, OK
but not this week, haven't done confirming or denying that clearing the log daily prevents the router to go berserk - so far, since last reboot, it hasn't degraded
will be back in a few days, or sooner if my experiment fails  :-\

my ISP informed me that the gigabit router has arrived and tomorrow I'll be installing it
thus, my little experiment will be stopped

the 605L will be used as an wireless AP, no routing at all; and will also turn off the SPI Firewall and the DHCP server - if with this config the unit still proves problematic ...

---

if I find some person willing, I would test the router in a different environment

---

note:
for the last week I've been manually clearing the log multiple times a day and found out that the router stability is not degrading - looks pretty conclusive to me

Hope the new router will work well. At least we tried.

Good Luck.

I too hope the new router will perform, I'm tired of broken / problematic equipment

don't get me wrong, but after this experience I cannot in good faith buy and or recommend a D-Link router to anyone - it was the 1st and my last D-Link unit

---

at this point I wish I still had the original rev B unit so I can send back for a warranty replacement to the store I bought it from

I understand your frustration. This is a entry level model router and over all it should work well. Side from the log issues, I presume it does. This issue is limited to this model router and maybe your region as you seem to be the only one who's found this problem at this time. I don't have this particular model however I have many other models and have tested them and all work very well including logging. I'd recommend a different model however you seem to have one on the way.

Good Luck.
