DAP-1522 causes restart wireless logs in DIR-655
« on: April 05, 2014, 09:24:15 AM »

I just purchased a DAP-1522 to extend my wireless in my house. I have a DIR-655 as my main router. It all connects fine. I have a hard wired connection between the two, and have the 1522 set up as an Access Point. My devices connect to either one and all seems hunky-dorry.

BUT... I noticed that in my DIR-655 wireless logs, I get a restart wireless log about every 5 minutes or so, and sometimes a "All wireless shut down" which seems to be the worst when that happens. Every thing reconnects, but sometimes that causes a momentary drop out of connection on my ipad. I have my channels manually set to 1 for the 655 and 6 for the 1522. I unplugged the 1522 and after an hour, no wireless restarts in the 655, and I never had an issue before I added the 1522.

What can I do to make these two play together nicely?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router and DAP? Look at sticker under router and DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the router and DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Try using chl 11 on the 655 and 1 on the DAP...farther apart the better.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Dir-655 hardware A4, Firmware 1.34NA
DAP-1522 hardware B1, firmware 2.02

Both DAP and DIR have the same SSID and password.
Wireless mode n g and b, tried N and G only - no difference.

I had width at 20 and then tried 20/40, no difference
I had channel 1 for 655 and 6 for 1522, just changed 1522 to 11, still getting the restarts.
I do have a 2.4 ghz phone, but I turned it off and put the handset in a metal pot away from the router and no difference.
I turned off Short G1, no difference.
WLAN Partition is off.

I am in the country so no other adapters around - just me. I used InSSIDer and as far as I can tell, everything looks ok.
If I turn off the 1522, then the 655 is happy. With the 1522 on, the 655 will periodically restart wireless, about every 2-5 minutes.

How close is the DAP to the DIR?

DIR is in the basement in one corner of the house. DAP is on first floor about 45 feet away.

InSSIDer shows a co-channel on the DIR. Where is that coming from?

In cases of other WiFi singles being around the main host router, I presume that sometimes that co-channels may be used by the main host router, thus the reason of the other channels besides the preferred 1, 6 or 11.

Does the DIR restart if you just disconnect the LAN cable between the DAP and DIR? Leaving the DAP ON?

You might try the following: Lower the power out put of the DAP from High to Medium or Low and test, and or do the same on the DIR. Reduce the broadcast foot print between the both of them..

One thing that could be a problem here is that your DIR Rev A was a Draft wireless N router. So the driver spec was never certified on Rev A models. It was on Rev B. Same thing with the DAP Rev A, however on Rev B models both DAP and DIR, the wireless spec finally passed certification. During this process I presume that many changes were implemented in Rev B and thus were not or may not have been included in Rev A models after development was over. So there maybe some incompatibility issues here...

There is FW both both the DAP and DIR available as a last resort to try...

I had tried reducing power before with no improvement.

But your idea of disconnecting the LAN cable was a good one. I disconnected it, cleared the DIR log and checked about 2 hours later. NO wireless restarts!. I reconnected the LAN cable and within 3 minutes, got a wireless restart!

Not sure what conclusion to draw from there, other than I don't think I need to pursue a channel collision anymore.

Ensure the LAN cable is good between the DIR and DAP first off.
Then make sure your setting the DAP IP address statically on the DAP, I think yon can set a static IP address..Try setting it for 192.168.0.22...Something out side the main routers IP address pool of .100 thru .199.

Have always had a static IP.

Cable is an interesting thought. The cable run is NOT direct. I go through another dumb switch to get to the 655. Wondering if that could be causing it. I don't have a cable long enough to go direct, but I might be able to hook up something just temporarily to test the theory.

Ya you need to remove the switch and direct connect to start seeing if cable or switch is problem. Can you temp move the dap where the switch is and connect the DAP to the cable there just to test?

I think that might be the issue! I connected the DAP directly to the DIR, about 20 feet away. Let it sit for about 1 hour and 16 minutes. Had only two wireless restarts and no major disconnects during that time! I would usually have about one every 5 minutes and a major disconnect every half hour or so.  I should have thought of that earlier - I have a lot of network cables throughout my house and didn't even think about how they were connected.

There are less wireless devices connected to the DAP now too because of where it is, so maybe that would affect the restarts. I'll have to see when I get it in a better position, but I have hope!

Of course, now where I have the DAP is almost totally useless as an extender, but I can get a longer cable and find a better place for it. So that will be my next test

Thanks so much for your patience and help. It's great to have your expertise help me sort through the issues.   :D

Ya I'd go thru all cabling and check them. CAT6 is cheap now days. Patch cables and spools of cable are cheap. I bought a 1000ft spool for less than $100...

Good Luck.
