Unblocking UDP Packets
« on: November 26, 2013, 09:25:09 AM »

Hey, a game I play uses available ports and sends UDP packets across them to transmit data, but my router(firmware 1.0;hardware A1) apparently blocks UDP packets, so I end up with corrupted textures, models, etc quite frequently. Here's what it says on the game's help section:

"The ROBLOX client isn't bound to use a specific port for outgoing data, rather it scans to find a free port on your machine. Thus if your router is blocking UDP packets on ANY port, you may run into problems. Ports for the ROBLOX client are selected and assigned dynamically for each game session.

If you're running a router, look up the router's manual and see how to unblock them."

After reading the manual for the Dir-857 router, I believe I found where I can configure where UDP packets are blocked(Application Rules), but I don't know where to go from there:

Where should I go from this point to unblock UDP packets across all of my ports?

If you have uPnP enabled you could use Virtual Server would be my first bet, then Application Rules (Port Forwarding)

I would start with QoS first however and review this and set up a QoS rule for the device you are using this for.  Look for the Single PC or Device example and use that and test it out:
DIR-857 Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL

Set the priority for 128 then go to 50, and use the Global 0 to 65535 ports and Remote IPs Ranges. Set Protocol to BOTH. This should handle both UDP and TCP packet handling.

If uPnP is enabled with QoS, game play should be good.

You still have the same ISP modem? What is the Mfr and Model of the ISP modem?

Thanks for the quick response :)

I followed your guide and changed the settings accordingly, but the corrupted textures, etc are sort of a random thing, so I'll have to test the game out for a while to see if they pop up again. I'll post back in a week or so to let you know how things went.

Thanks for helping :)
