Is this a problem that you folks run into often, or did I just get a lemon?

Sounds like a lemon.  I've come across only a handful of this type of issue over a several year period -- and that spans all camera models with Night Mode, not just the DCS-5020L.

After 1 1/2 hours on the phone with support, they finally agreed that the unit is defective.  What a frustrating process and a complete and utter waste of time.  Now I have to pack up the product, uninstall my hardware/mounting, package the mess and go to the post office (where I will pay the postage).  All because of a faulty product that was not of my doing.  I will never buy another D-Link product.
