Looking for suggestion on Gigabit setup
« on: April 09, 2013, 09:30:14 AM »

HI;

I'm going to add a second computer to my home setup in the near future and need the new computer to be connected to my older computer via Gb ethernet.

I have U-verse and I also have a Dlink 655.  One problem I have seen, at least if I am connected via the U-verse router (I've not tested to see if this is a problem with the Dlink) is that the fastest speed I can get locally is the speed of my internet connection.  For example; my Internet connection has a download speed of 3MBps.  with 2 devices (computer and laptop both plugged into 100 mbps ports on the uverse router; I can never transfer files between the 2 computer faster than 24Mbps.  I don't understand why there is this limitation?

In getting a new hub / router / switch for the Gb setup, what do I need to get to ensure that I don't run into this same problem with a new setup?

I still have to connect to the U-Verse router to get to the Internet, but could have another Hub / switch that I put the 2 computers on to reach Gb speeds.  One port from the new device will have to connect to a 100Mb port on the U-verse device to get to the Internet.

Do I need a managed switch to avoid the problems I see now where it slows computer to computer transfers down to the speed of my Internet connection?  Can you suggest a model?

Thank You,

Jamie Dolan

Yes, adding a external Gb network switch will help improve file xfer speeds between wired LAN devices. This helps to eliminate un-necessary ISP modem or router processing that can impact performance.

Recommended set up would look like this:
ISP modem>DIR-655>External Gb network switch<>All wired LAN devices connected to switch. The switch will provide the fastest performance between LAN wired devices and yet still each device can access the Internet.

I also connect higher bandwidth devices directly to the router that usually do not need any cross device access, like xbox gaming or maybe a PC that needs alot of bandwidth for downloading. I connect my 2 xboxes directly to the router so any major activity on the switch doesn't effect the gaming activities. Then I have a boxee box and a file server directly connected to the switch for seamless and smooth video streaming between these to devices.

My setup looks like this:
ISP modem>DIR-827><External Gb 24port network switch<>Wired LAN devices, boxee box, file server, and pcs connected to switch.
                           ><2 xboxes connected directly to the DIR-827 router and not the switch.

I recommend an un-managed Gb network switch. Dlink has a few models to choose from and ports from 4 to 48 I think. Pick port usages on what needs are.

Let us know what you go with and end up getting.

Any status on this?  ???

HI;

I got my new computer 2 days ago and I just got one of the 8 port GB switches; it came today.  I hooked it up and all is working.  I've not had a chance to do any extensive speed testing yet.  I had to share the drives from my old computer that is now acting as more of a server and ran into some really weird permission / UAC issues that took me much of the day to get fixed.

I'll do some tests tomorrow to confirm the speed with my new setup, but the few quick glances I took at the use while moving a couple files were well over 100Mbps, so I assume that I am good to go for full Gb capacity.

Thanks very much for the assistance.
