Theoretically it shouldn't be that hard, however there being so many different mfrs of HDDs, it would be kind if hard to say that making all of them work wouldnt' be major undertaking. Yes I agree that for the most part, the underlying platforms for HDDs and USB should be mainstream standards used between all HDDs and the USB connections. However when it comes to Shareport and these routers. I seen various problems in using this function and have personally chosen to avoid use it unless I'm helping to test a device like I have here in the forums. Most of the time it works and does for my 2Tb My Book. I have seen it were FW was involved and breaks Shareport like we are currently seeing on the DIR-655 v2.07 FW. It's possible there could be an issue with FW and SP and your particular model HDD drive. If Dlink said only 500Gb drive is supported, I presume this means physical drive space on one drive. I'll have to go look at my drive however I think it's got 2 500Gb drives and uses the SW to gain the 2Tb size in some RAID configuration. I wonder if your 3Tb drive has larger physical drives bigger than 500gb. Possible?

One other suggestion, do you have a smaller USB drive that you can test out? Friend or get one at a store with a refund policy. If you can find an actual 250 or 500Gb physical sized drive to test out. If this works on your router, then you'll know.

Doing some more digging, I happen to download the lastest version of SP and unzipped the package from here: DIR-835.

I drilled down and found there was a Help folder in HTML and opened it up in IE.
I went to the Troubleshooting/An error occurs when I connect to a USB device using SharePort Plus section.
It reports:
The device server may not support the USB device.
Solution - The device server does not support USB devices which operate using Isochronous transfer.  Please confirm that the connected USB device is not an isochronous device.  For details on the USB device's specification, please contact its manufacturer.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your HDD and working with this router or not.

BTW, you don't have this version of SP already, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

FWIW, the Uverse leader's assessment:

Oh, I see. The DIR-857 has a feature where you can just plug in a USB drive and it becomes a file server for that drive.

In this case, I'm 99% sure the problem is that the drive is 3TB. Drives exceeding 2TB must use a GPT partition table or otherwise have to have some type of sector remapping mechanism within the drive controller in order to be used. I almost guarantee that the DIR-857 does not have this capability, so it's not able to use the drive.

Ok then, sounds like we have an answer.  ::) Makes sense, I bet your physical drive sizes are bigger than 500Gb's, probably 1Tb.

So, any chance of you connecting this drive to a PC and sharing it out for use?

I could.  That would mean always having my tower on in the back of the condo.

I suppose that's all I can do.  I really wanted to take advantage of this technology.  I guess it's just not  there yet.

Thanks FN!

I am currently using 1 TB on this router. It did not connect initially but I figured out that there was a password lock on the WD Passport SE. Removed the password, reconnected and worked like a charm. Try to remove the password and see if it connects. I have a 2 TB WD My book live connected to this router and there are no issues at all. For Shareport plus utility, use the one that is available with the DIR -835 from Dlink website or the one that is available through the router CD.
