You should hear the fans spool up and down.  Additionally, if you log into the Web Interface and select the "STATUS" link, you can see the temperature of each HDD.

doing a quick search i didnt see an obvious healthy hard drive temp.

what do the forums recommend.

and many thanks to all who have read and taken time to address my questions.  your service is appreciated.

For the past 3+ years, my two DNS-343s hovered around 41 to 46 degrees and I haven't experienced any HDD related issues.
