D-Link DNS Pro-Storage Devices
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:24:49 AM »

Although this news is a few weeks old, here's a description and list of D-Link's new enterprise DNS series:

D-Link Woos Small Business With New ShareCenter Pro Storage Solution
September 2, 2011

D-Link have been pretty quiet this year so far, and they may well have been spending their time hatching a plan to crack the small business storage market. This week, the company announced the new ShareCenter Pro, a range of business class storage solutions offering higher-end features including iSCSI support, dual Gigabit Ethernet and more.

The unified storage line offers centralised, secure storage, data backup and disaster recovery features via the Cloud as well as support for RAID 0/1/5/6/10, encrypted volumes and virtual disk drive expansion. The DNS-1100-04 4-bay desktop ships with 512 MB RAM, whilst it’s bigger brother, the DNS-1200-05 5-bay solution is boosted to 1GB RAM. Twin Gigabit ports and two USB 2.0 ports are equipped on both models.

Those two models comprise the “N Series” whilst D-Lunk’s “S Series” includes the DNS-1250-04 4-bay desktop, DNS-1250-06 6-bay desktop and the DNS-1550-04 4-bay 1U rackmount. All three models ship with 2GB RAM, twin Gigabit Ethernet, 5 USB 2.0 ports, RAID 0/1/5/6/10, encrypted volumes, and VDD expansion.

Suggested pricing and availability as follows:

  • D-Link DNS-1100-04 ShareCenter Pro 1100 – available in October for $662.99
  • D-Link DNS-1200-05 ShareCenter Pro 1200 is available now for $773.49
  • D-Link DNS-1250-04 ShareCenter Pro 1250 will be available in October for $972.99
  • D-Link DNS-1250-06 ShareCenter Pro 1250 will be available in October for $1,172.99
  • D-Link DNS-1550-04 ShareCenter Pro 1550 will be available in September for $1,499.99

JavaLawyer,
One thing the posting was unclear about...will the new units come with the demonstrated loyalty that D-Link has shown to previous products (see DNS-343 and DSM-520) in the way of continued product support that we have all come to love and respect?

There's nothing I'd like more than to see another DNS-343 firmware update, but the reality is that new product lines were released, like the DNS-320 and DNS-325, and I'm sure there are more to come. I don't know if D-Link will continue to support the DNS-343 in the way of additional firmware updates, but they did do a good job for the few years that the product was out. Newer DNS models are benefiting from the hindsight and lessons learned from the DNS-343 and other legacy DNS models, resulting in continued improvements on the newer product lines.

As for the demise of the DSM-520, now we have the Boxee Box, a revolutionary product with rave reviews that's running circles around the competition.
