DSM-520 - No Internet Connection

Hi

Can anyone help please?

My DSM-520 fails the internet connection test. (The test located under the GENERAL menu)

I have tried everything I can think of with no success.

I have tried emailing tech support, but they have been no help at all.

The device is wired to a BT Home Hub Router

The IP of the router is 192.168.1.254

The network settings are

IP address (Static) 192.168.1.109
Gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS 192.168.1.254
Mask 255.255.255.0

I have tried various other free IP's.

I have tried disabling all firewalls, the router firewall, the Windows firewall, and the McAfee firewall, all to no avail.

I can ping and telnet to the box. I can connect via Wired and Wireless with no problem.

All other functions i.e. Music/Pictures/Video work fine, using the D_Link server or TVersity.

But I cannot connect to the internet, or check for firmware updates.

Current firmware is 1.04.05eu

That's pretty poor support ECF.  At the very least you could point him to a web site that will support him.  If not it wouldn't hurt to give him some things to try.

What's the network settings in the hub (192.168.1.254)?

The IP settings for the hub allow addresses from 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254, new devices are allowed to connect automatically. I have tried static IP's and DHCP, all works fine except internet access.

ECF - Surely an EU box is no different to DSM's anywhere else, I could change the country setting to US if that would help? - Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone feel free to help out.

I personally have not used this device with this firmware or know how reliable it might be or any differences. First thing I would do I remove the hub you mention and just setup the DSM-520 and your computer using your router and get an IP address on both devices.

I may have given you confusing information, the "BT Home Hub" is a router, it is a rebadged Thomson Speedtouch 7G. BT stands for British Telecom.

And I assume you can get onto internet from a PC connected to the same router in the IP range?  Have you tried with wireless connection?  Because I myself have a problem getting connected with ethernet connection.

Check the Logs of the router, look for traffic being blocked by you local Firewall. My guess is it's being stopped there.

When you log into your routers status page do you get a WAN IP address starting with 192.168.xx.xx?

Cheers for the replies.

There is no problem gaining internet access from any of the computers connected wirelessly to the router.

Connecting the DSM via wireless works fine, I use a wired connection because the two boxes are next to each other.

The router IP address is 192.168.1.254

The router has a firewall and I am using McAfee security software, I thought the problem might be down to the firewall, the Windows one is turned off as McAfee is handling it, so I tried turning the router and McAfee firewalls completely off, still no luck. So it cannot be a firewall or port forwarding issue.

As mentioned before, streaming music/video/pictures to the DSM it works great, assigning IP's either static or via DHCP is no problem, when given the opportunity the router assigns it 192.168.1.3

Do your PCs work wired as well if you plug them in you stated there all wireless?

This laptop works fine hard wired to the router, I have never tried either of the other three in the household.

Odd. Try changing the DNS settings on the DSM-750. Set the Primary to the routers IP address and the secondary to 4.2.2.2.

Another thing can you tell me the WAN IP address your router gets from your modem. This should be located on a Status page in your routers web based configuration.

I didn't get back to you because I have changed ISP, and as such I am now using a new router.

Is it the Sagem 2504, I was hoping that changing this would solve the problem.

I'm afraid that this has not happened, still exactly the same, all working fine except for being unable to access the internet.

Any more thoughts?
