DIR 655 UpnP
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:54:58 PM »

I recently upgraded from Linksys WRT54G to D-Link DIR-655 firmware version 2.0. All the features are working as advertised however i am having difficulties accessing UPnP services in my network.  I have a Samsung 55" internet enabled TV connected to the router and also have few devices that can stream over UPnP to the TV.  The option to enable the UPnP is enabled in the router configuration however its not finding devices in the network ... comparing that with Linksys ... all i had to do is enable the UPnP and all my devices discovered each other and started streaming without any issue.  What do i need to do in D-Link to enable the UPnP devices ... if this issue is reported/solved at some other thread please advice and i can search for the thread ...

Thanks

Try setting up DHCP reserved IP addresses for all your devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain IP addressing.

How are the devices connecting to the router? Wired or wireless?

What are you trying to stream? PC to TV? Netflix to TV? And how do you mean "its not finding devices in the network"? Are you looking on some screen on the router? Or perhaps a network map on your PC? The question isn't what you need to do to enable UPnP in the router, if you checked the box, its enabled. The question is what doesn't work that you need to work, and how to get it to work with UPnP.

so my samsung TV (DLNA Enabled) is setup wired and my i/OS devices are wireless in the network ... They all are setup for DHCP ... I have enabled the upnp in the D-Link router ...

When i enable the samsung Allshare (their version of connecting upnp devices) it keeps on scanning for the device to connect to ... my i/OS devices are also searching for devices to connect to but they are not able to find each other ... with my linksys router when i would try to connect to allshare, all the devices will find each other and start streaming content (hosted on i/OS) to the samsung tv ... i  upgraded since my linksys in a 54G only and streaming HD was buffering quite a bit ...

All the search i have done tells me there is no port that i need to enable for the upnp devices to work with each other ... i am using the 2.0 version of the firmware ... i tried 2.01 but my router got funky so i rolled it back ... any advice will help as this router was bought for the purpose of streaming upnp content ....

Try setting up DHCP reserved (Static) IP addresses for all your devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain IP addressing.

I would say its something to do with the network rather then any flaw with the router. Don't assume malfunction without hard evidence. What do the logs say at the time of scanning? Does it see the activity? Lets start with this i/OS. Could you tell us more about these devices and their software?

try turning On (or OFF) Wireless Partitioning in the advanced wireless section....Save and reboot the 655...

I have mine set to OFF,... when it was ON, my wireless devices couldn't see each other very well.

I have problems with my uPnP service too.  I use it to port forward my outside connections to my internal cameras.  When the router is first powered on and I run the camera software, it reports that the port is correctly forwarded.  After a period of time, usually on the order of a few days, I suddenly can't connect to my cameras.  If I log on to the server pc, turn off the streaming and restart it, the software reports that it can't find any uPnP devices.  If I pull the power on the router, it still won't work, but if I log on to the router and do a reset from the Tools|System|Reboot the Device menu, once the reboot is complete, the software can then get a reply back from the router, and everything works again for a while.
