DNS-343 #2 Delivered Today
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:15:53 PM »

Hello Everybody,

My new DNS-343 arrived today, and I am trying to decide what to load it with.

I can't afford the WD Black series, so I was looking at the WD20EARS or WD20EADS.

Any recommedations?

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

i have one of each, both works out of the box

for WD20EARS if you want full performance,
you will need to do some tricks to solve the sector alignment problem

Are you referring to the 4k sector special format for Windows XP?

Does this apply to the DNS-343?

Thanks!

Ahh, sorry to hear you are having problems.

Is it slow access time to files?

Are there any 2TB WD drives that do not suffer from this problem, or do we have to use a different MFG?

IMHO, the alignment problem only affect write, read should not be affected

if you follow my guide and use standard volumes, you should be able to align the sectors

we are still having problem aligning raid volumes and dcmwai is trying various suggestions

you can use the previous WDEADS, for me I have both
the newer WDEARS runs cooler!

The Western Digital WD20EARS  are $125 and the Western Digital WD20EADS are $150.

From what I understand, both will perform the same, but the EARS will require some special formatting?

I read through the thread you pointed me to, but I don't understand what is being discussed 8-(.

Should I just pay the extra $100 ($25x4) and get the plug and play EADS? Or are there EADS hotter and slower than the EARS after the special formatting?

Thanks,
