New Beta Firmware 122b04NA Released on 1/23/2010 for DIR-855.
« on: January 23, 2010, 07:14:46 AM »

This new firmware implements the HNAP protocol.  See this link for details: http://hnap.org/
After installing this firmware,  DNS immediately refused to work until I performed a hard reset to factory defaults. (I have DNS Relay disabled and the router was NOT passing the DNS server IP addresses to the PC's.)

While manually entering the configuration, I noticed that the 5 GHz channel width options have changed to 20 MHz and Auto 20/40 MHz instead of the previous 20 MHz and 40 MHz.  I hope this doesn't bring back the old "Good Neighbor" problem that was in some of the older firmwares where the router was easily forced into the 20 MHz mode by the presence of other routers in the neighborhood. Incidentally the 20 MHz channel width is now the default for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. (40 MHz bandwidth is required for connection speeds over 150 MHz.)

Other than the above mentioned problems, the router is so far performing well.

   Get your copy here: ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir855/Beta/Firmware/
After installation the Status page will show firmware:  1.22NA   2010/01/21.
 Good Luck!!

I just installed the firmware as well.  However, I did not have any of the problems you mentioned.

The HNAP protocol is an interesting addition.  I installed Cisco's Network Magic (http://purenetworks.com/product/pro.php) to see what the protocol could do for me.

It does make administering a network much easier from a single interface.  It did not add any additional functionality but did consolidate some of the network administration tasks to a single screen.  It will even allow you to easily lock down a network with the network filtering without having to type any MAC addresses in.  You just make sure the devices you trust are identified and when you lock it down, it puts in all the MAC addresses and turns on filtering for you.  I am assuming this was not possible before HNAP was on the router but this is just an assumption.

I wonder what D-link has up it's sleeve with adding this protocol.

HNAP was there since the first day of this router.
They only fixed a security hole in this implementation.

Well, had you never said it, I would have never known of the existance of HNAP :D

Nor would I have known of Cisco Network Magic Pro.  Interesting tool for visualizing your network.  It's too bad I can't put in custom mappings of rooms and switches though.  As it is, it is just very cluttered.  I do like some of the features to view and change the router's configuration though.

The network history, reporting and internet access are also fabulous tools.

The 1.22 beta 04 brings more issues back for me than it resolves.  I now have packets being dropped on the LAN, I still have packets dropping and errors on the wireless 2.4GHz, and I'm now starting to get errors on the 5GHz wireless as well.  Great job D-Link!  ):  I had reset the stats to see if they came back so below is just for the past few minutes.

We used to work with Pure Networks who made Network Magic before Cisco purchased it.
We closed the security failure with the previous versions.

I always had a few packets dropped on LAN when the router starts. Check if it occurs after start.

The fact that you get some errors sometimes on 2G4 and 5G is fine. There is a trade-off between pushing up speed and getting errors. Just make the router very slow and you do not have any errors, but you system will overall be slow. The ratio between total traffic and errors should be acceptable. If you have too many retransmissions you will loose speed due to them.

Downloaded the firmware, set it pure default, and set the wireless to 20/40, left all the other settings default.

Definately getting alot less wireless errors.

Hi.  Just went to download and see TWO FW 122b04NA folders with the same creation date.  I assume you guys are talking about the one that has HNAP in the folder name, right?  The other folder with the FW doesn't have the HNAP capability?

Thanks.

Here is the link to the latest firmware released on 2/8/2010 which fixes a security hole in HNAP and the DNS Relay slow down issue:
