DGL-4500 1.14 firmware
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:24:42 AM »

I recently purchased one of these routers and so far it works great, no wireless or wired connection drops, can reach 300Mbps with Dell N adapter, no problems streaming, although I haven't tried a huge file transfer that some people seem to have issues with.  Anyway, I have read a lot about new firmware issues, so I guess I won't update until those are resolved, but I see no mention of others with v1.14 or even that as a download.  Is it not common?  Are there any major problems I should be concerned with?  I'd consider myself a moderate user so I guess I should just wait and see if everything works for now???

Thanks

"If it works, Don't fix it!!!"  ;)
I would stay were your at. FW 1.15 and up have some issues here and there. Current v1.21NA released to public isn't good. Beta 03 and 08 of 1.21 are good accept WiFi Needs some more work. Wired is stable as far as I know and my experience testing it. If your not seeing any issues on 1.14 then stick with it.

Might be a dumb question, but where do you get the beta firmwares?  The only one I see is 1.21NA.  Thanks.

You can get the Beta 08 here:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dgl4500/Beta/Firmware/dgl4500_fw_121b08NA_beta.zip

Wired is stable, wireless needs some attention.  Don't use the released FW v1.21NA on the dlink web site.

I upgraded from a Netgear WNR854T to the DLink DGL-4500 so that I could avoid rebooting my router all the time. At the same time I wanted to maintain fast speeds with my downloads and over my network both at the same time.

With the 1.14 firmware that was loaded on the router out of the box I have not had to restart the router once in the first two weeks of my ownership. However, at times the speeds have dropped to less that desireable speeds.

I have read that I should not at this time update the firmware to 1.20 or the 1.21 beta 03. Should I consider updating it to the 1.15  or 1.21 beta 08 firmware version though? What benefits will I receive from upgrading to that one?

What kind of speeds does it go down to?  Is that for internet, or intranet transfers?

If your unit is working well and great for you, keep at the FW it's loaded with. Theres no real improvement accept the addition of CAPTHA and some minor things they fixed. Your not missing anything by staying where your at. I wish I could go back at times however, working with the Betas and with DLink, I'm happy with the performance and features of v1.21 Betas. Just working on the Wifi issues some of us are seeing, need some attention and presume DLink knows and is working on them. Enjoy the 4500 where it's at right now. Im re-posting Xbox live Gaming and GameFuel setups again since they got remove. Will be stuck to the forums this time. I have a buddy in IN that I just set up with Gaming and GameFuel on his 4500 loaded with v1.02. He's very happy with the performance with XBL. My other XBL buddy is using FW v1.21 Beta 03. He's happy.

Both. I experienced neither problems before changing over to this router. The intranet speeds affect me when using my Slingbox mostly and occasionally when I remotely connect to my desktop computer running Windows 7 Ultimate from my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium or when transferring files. My Slingbox will state network conditions are not good enough to continue running.

As for my Internet speeds they will be fine at times, downloading at approximately 1.34 MBps from newsgroups and then drop to around 70 KBps. Pages like Google even will then even start loading slowly along with other sites I never have trouble with loading.

When I upgraded my router I also upgraded my wireless networking adapter. I had a Netgear WN311T. I am now using a DLink DWA-552. I was curious about the benefits of using a card with a PCI Express interface.

Consider upgrading to the 1.15 firmware. It worked perfectly for me when I had it.

I would stick with the FW 1.14. It has worked well out of the box for me. I would double check your settings to make sure all your devices are configured for the new router.

I am running a HP laptop with windows 7 home premium and have had zero issues with the router. None with my sons xbox or the other xp computers in our home also.

I doubt a different FW version will solve your problem and would look elsewhere for a fix.
