Is a reformat necessary with firmware upgrade?

A backup of the data on the NAS is a REAL good idea, but I have not had to format when upgrading firmware versions yet.

did you change your formatting to EXT3 when it became available in firmware? That's the only time I absolutely HAD to do the backup/format routine.

But yes, it's a seriously good idea to do a backup before you do any changes to firmware, if you have data on it that you value.

I did not go to EXT3.  I figured it would be somewhat slower with the additional writing required, and since the NAS units are 100% backup, I figure that I'd rather have the speed than the additional security of the journaling filesystem.  My two NAS units get written a lot and read a little, so writing speeds are most important to me.

Ok, in your situation that makes sense. If I had 2 units I think I would try 1 with EXT2 and 1 with EXT3, just to see what kind of speed loss the EXT3 user would experience. But I won't have a second unit for quite awhile yet, so I guess that it will remain a mystery for awhile.
