For the set-up the quick install guide requires a LAN connection from the DIR-880L to my computer. My HP has no LAN connection. How else can I connect? Can I use USB to USB?

What region are you located?

You can connect via wireless. There should be a card in the box and or a sticker on the router with temporary wireless names and pw to gain access to the router and it's web page after you successfully connect wirelessly to it. Also review the user manual as well:

Also the QRS mobile app on iPhone and I think Android, will work as well.
